Ryan Thompson Sorry about the delay in responding. The biggest thing for me is to make sure that you have a place to sleep comfortably. I really liked my lazy boy. Also, listen to yourself and your body. I was able to be active a lot sooner than my loved ones wanted me to be. And I feel I healed faster. Good luck to you and yours!!!

God Bless you Ryan being so courageous and continuing your life with physical activities, I had AVR two years ago, I am in my seventies, this year I met up with sons in Colorado mountains, elev. 13,000 ft., had to climb at a slower pace and stopped occasionally to catch my breath but was so happy to be able to once again embrace the awesome natural scenic beauty of the Colorado mountain area.
Best of luck

Hi Ryan, I'm a 72 year old female who live in Bradenton Fl. i have an appt. to meet with my cardiologist tomorrow afternoon to ask his opinion on how soon I should have my Aortic valve replaced. I had a mitral valve replacement (mechanical) done in 2001 and at that time I was told that my aortic valve was also damaged due to Rheumatic Fever when I was a child.
I will be 73 years old this month and have some concerns about another surgery. I've been told I'm not a candiate for the TAVR procedure. So my concerns run the gamut from scar tissue, the wire currently in my chest from the previous surgery. Along with how will my quality of life will improve after surgery. I currently have a very hard time catching my breath even after light exertion, like walking any distance.
There's also been a discussion on where I should have this surgery done, did you have it done in Florida or did you leave the state? Any information or experiences you can share with me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Roni Reinhold

Ryan Thompson Roni, my surgeon was Dr. Blane Heric and my hospital was Morton Plant Mease. There is the Morgan Heart Hospital within Morton Plant Mease which is a dedicated section for preparation, surgery and recovery. In my two stays there, the care was top notch and my family was kept well informed. My cardiologist is Dr, Robert Black and he too, is a phenomenal doctor. But all of the cardiologists that I experienced in that practice were excellent. Everyone I saw at that hospital had excellent bedside manner and gave me excellent care. And the food was very tasty.
I had a negative experience with the doctors especially the cardiologists at Florida Hospital when I ended up there for an appendectomy a few months after my open heart surgeries. I experienced a level of arrogance and felt like a number and a bother. But I can only speak to my own experience and will avoid that hospital even though it is only 3 miles from my house.
My scar is was not much different after the second surgery than after the first surgery and doesn't really bother me. Dr Heric also had to cut and untie the wires on my sternum to do the second open heart surgery. According to him, it took time but really didn't seem like a problem. One interesting thing that I noticed is that the clicking became more pronounced after second surgery. I also went from being able to walk only a block or two without stopping to being able to walk as long as I wanted within a week of getting home from the second valve.
These are just my two cents. And feel free to ask if you have any other questions that I can help with. Also, be sure to have massage before the surgery. I experienced much less numbness and pain in my shoulder and I attribute the massage.
