About Me (In My Own Words)
My name is Beth I am 55 years old and I was diagnosed with coarctation of the aorta as an infant and had surgical repair at the age 9. In my thirties, I found out I also have a bicuspid aortic valve. Apparently these congenital heart defects can go hand in hand.
Almost seven years ago, I found out I have severe stenosis of the aortic valve. I still feel great with no symptoms, exercise regularly and killed my stress test last November. I have always been told when you have symptoms we will do the valve replacement. However, now they feel it is better to have it done as a low risk patient that is otherwise healthy with no underlying medical conditions. There is also a concern since I have had the severe stenosis for so long there is a high risk of a cardiac event. They never expected me to do so well with the severe stenosis!
My surgery is in 4 weeks at the Cleveland Clinic. I am a bit stressed as we are moving into our new home in 2 weeks that is finally done after two years! The urgency to get the surgery done is my first grand child is due October 10th. Since I live in Cincinnati, we will stay with my son and expectant wife in Cleveland while I have this done.
Like all of you, I am anxious but know it needs to be done. I have chosen not to do a mechanical valve despite the knowledge my valve will need to be replaced again in 10-15 years. But I am banking on a TAVR for a valve in valve replacement when it needs replaced again.
I will have my cardiac cath two days before my surgery with preop testing/exam done on the day prior to surgery.
