About Me (In My Own Words)
I was diagnosed with a congenital heart disorder when very young with the discovery of a heart murmur. The murmur was caused by a bicuspid aortic valve. In 2003, I was hospitalized with chest pain and pressure. After many tests, it was discovered that I had developed an ascending aortic aneurysm as a result of the bicuspid aortic valve and untreated high blood pressure. Since then I have been treating my blood pressure with medication and my cardiologist has been monitoring the aneurysm with yearly CT scans. After consulting with a thoracic surgeon in early 2012, we have decided it is time to repair the aneurysm. Initially, I was to have the aortic valve replaced via the Ross procedure during the same surgery. But, due to time constraints and complications during the aortic aneurysm replacement, I received a tissue (or bioprosthetic) valve instead.
