About Me (In My Own Words)
I began having episodes of Afib around 2005, each of which had to be treated with electro-cardioversion. No underlying cause was determined. However, I found that they seemed to be triggered by cold drinks. Avoiding the latter, I was able to reduce their frequency to less than once per year.
Then, in 2013 my doctor found a murmur, which was diagnosed as mitral valve prolapse. Over the next three years, regurgitation gradually developed to moderate and then severe. Treatment will be a repair of chordae tendoneae and a full maze procedure via sternotomy.
The time leading up to surgery has been difficult and surreal. But the more I think of it, the more I have to be thankful for:
- I'm getting treated early and before any real debilitating symptoms occur
- Dr Tirone David, my surgeon, is considered among the top in the world, and the staff are top rate
- Not working for the month before surgery (I freelance) has given me time to solidly prepare mentally, with family/friends, and things for recovery
- It'll be Spring :)
- And I'm especially thankful for this group and all of the support that everyone here provides
