About Me (In My Own Words)
I was preparing for the Sydney "City to Surf" 2023, a fun run 14.4km long when I felt a light headed on one of my practice runs.
This was dismissed by my physiotherapist as being normal with recovery from exercise with athletes. So, I continued to exercise and I ran the Sydney " City to Surf " in August 2023.
Again, in October 2023, I felt light headed when I ran up a steep driveway. So, I thought something must be wrong.
I headed straight to my family Doctor who had been listening to my heart murmur for the last 30 years. He told me that my murmur was sounding much louder than normal, so he immediately referred me to a cardiologist.
After several tests I was told that I had aortic stenosis and a critically dilated ascending aorta and that I need corrective surgery.
I was referred to a cardiac surgeon who performed the surgery to replace my aortic valve with a bovine tissue valve and replace my dilated ascending aorta with a synthetic aorta.
The surgery was done on 13 Feb., 2024.
I have since been recovering very well. I returned to my work as structural engineer 4 weeks after the surgery.
I have completed 12 sessions of post surgery rehab. In the meantime I have joined a gym where I attend about 5 times per week for strength exercises.
I am also exercising to prepare for the 2024 Sydney "City to Surf" fun run again in August this year, 6 months after my surgery.
