About Me (In My Own Words)
At the end of 2015, severe shortnuess of breath and edema (among other classic signs I can see looking back on it now that I understand more how the heart functions) sent me to my PCP who referred me to a cardiologist. Through a long series of frightening tests I was diagnosed first with a congenital Atrial Septum Defect and cardiomyopathy, then with severe mitral valve regurgitation and moderate tricuspid regurgitation. I've been stabilized on medication since, but now must move forward with OHS to repair the valves (ideally - but replacement if necessary) and to patch up the ASD while they're in there. It is all still so unbelievable as I am an otherwise very fit and healthy 45-year-old and I am just now discovering a family history of heart disease. Time to get this speed bump behind me!!
I'm a very service-minded individual, so this event has been given the code name "Operation Oxygen Mask" (or Op OM for short) in the spirit of the pre-flight safety speech:
"If you are travelling with a child or someone who requires assistance, secure your mask first, and then assist the other person. Keep your mask on until a uniformed crew member advises you to remove it."
I'm going to go through this to be here long-term to be able to help all those who need me. God speed and care for all!
