About Me (In My Own Words)
I am 64 yrs old. I have severe aortic stenosis without symptoms. I am currently debating the eventual decision between open heart surgery, and TAVR. My left ventricular ejection fraction rating is 55% as of Nov 22. It was 55 % in March of 2022. One cardiac surgeon recommended waiting until symptoms present themselves or ejection rate is <50% to proceed, and another surgeon say's I could proceed now after other testing.
I was fortunate enough to be evaluated by Dr Joseph Bavaria of the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania. I quickly learned that Dr Bavaria is a renowned expert in aortic valve issues. After a review of my cardiac history and examination of several recent echo-cardiograms he recommended that I undergo open heart surgery to replace my aortic valve.
Surgery was scheduled for May 15, 2023.
My situation became more serious after i had a pre-operative cardiac catheterization test. The test indicated an 80% blockage in my left anterior descending artery, and an 80% blockage in a diagonal branch.
On May 15, 2023 I underwent aortic valve replacement, and double bypass surgery. Due to developing an off and on AFIB issue I was in the hospital for eight days.
Approximately one month later I am doing well. The AFIB issue is being addressed. It is believed to be a short term issue.
I cannot say enough about Dr Bavaria and his staff as well as the care I received at the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania.
