About Me (In My Own Words)
I had a heart murmur my entire life and had no problems that warranted medical coverage until later in my life. My blood pressure was an issue in my 40's so had an echo and after watching that from year to year I received the news that my "numbers" were heading to the magical #5. Heart cash was scheduled on a Friday and I was in surgery the following Friday for a valve replacement and a section of my aortic artery which had an aneurysm in it. I was basically a ticking time bomb. My surgeon, after reviewing a 3D scan, told me that my aortic artery came out the back of my heart and wrapped around my heart. So, since revealing this tidbit of information, he knew he would put the heart lung machine on my right side in lieu of the preferred left so he had plenty of room to work. After the surgery, which went well, and as I was in intensive care he told me that I had over 100 stiches in my heart! He also mentioned that because of the pressure my other valves were leaking as well and after he fixed what needed to be fixed those valves settled down and stopped leaking. He was more concerned about me than I was about me because I felt fine and kept me in ICU for an extra day in case anything "odd" would happen. My recovery went well and I did what he told me to do and life has continued on as God has intended. Since I was 54 when having the surgery, I am sure at some point I'll probably have to have another surgery but I am hoping that by that time it'll be able to be performed orthoscopically!! High hopes I am sure, but who knows what advances will happen in the years to come!
