About Me (In My Own Words)
My story began with a near syncopal episode, I nearly fainted. To understand what was happening my family doctor ordered a Holter monitor, a heart monitor worn for 24 hours to evaluate my heart rhythm. They found that I had several irregular heart beats, PVC's and some atrial arrhythmias. I was then asked to wear an Event Monitor, which recorded my heart rhythm when I pushed the button or had symptoms. With this device they were able to determine I was having episodes of SVT, or supraventricular tachycardia at rates of 180 beats per minute. A stress echo-cardiogram was then ordered and it was here that they visualized and diagnosed the fact that I have a bicuspid aortic valve and an ascending aortic anuerysm. I continue to have periods of chest pain with this and on October 27, 2011 I am going to have a valve sparing root replacement.
