About Me (In My Own Words)
Hi Folks, I started with a murmur being detected decades ago and eventually leading to an echocardiogram that showed moderate mitral regurgitation and mild aortic regurgitation. Also had some arrhythmias including non-sustained v-tach. Fortunately I've been asymptomatic and no apparent damage or growth to my heart for a long time and have gotten by with just a series of echoes and occasional stress echoes to monitor the progress. The mitral regurg. has gone to severe; the aortic has gone to mild to severe; and the tricuspid is now showing mild. After getting lots of six month extensions my cardiologist said now's the time. I'm 67, some mild dilation's showing showing up, so though still symptom-less he suggested going to Dr. Adams team at Mt. Sinai. Since they're so great at mitral repairs and there may be multiple valves in one operation he thinks they're the better choice than what's available here in New England. Coincidentally a younger guy who works for me found himself needing a mitral repair and I had already learned of Dr. Adams, so suggested he go to Mt. Sinai, which he did and he's now back distance running. I'm very lucky to have him as my mentor and "pathfinder" as it has now become my turn.
In preparation for going for my consult with Dr. Adams, my catheterization revealed a blockage in a bad place, placing more urgency on surgery, and a lot more worry. I was able to get moved up on the consultation with Dr. Adams' team and am now scheduled for surgery on 1/4/2019. While no one wishes for this, I'm feeling really good after my wife and I visited and met with Drs. Adams, Boateng and Dr. Waterford to go over the findings, the procedures, the options that might come up during surgery, etc. And, Dr. Adams, made it a point to take a lot of anxiety about urgency and severity off of us, which has made for a much more relaxed 2018 holiday season for us and everyone who's concerned about us. Can't say we're looking forward to it, but glad about the route we've chosen to follow.
I've been following heartvalvesurgery.com for several years and am thankful for Adam's work and huge service to the community to get it going, and maintain and improve it; especially getting the docs to be so active in contributing and supporting. Thanks for all your informative postings and stories and mutual support, and best wishes to you all,
Steve K.
