About Me (In My Own Words)
I am a 54 year old college professor, husband, and father of two daughters. When I was 21, I first noticed palpitations and by 23, I was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse. Some years later, it developed into regurgitation and I also developed atrial fibrillation. Other than funny heartbeats and occasional tiredness, I remained symptomatic. Nevertheless, in early June, my longtime cardiologist let me know that open heart surgery was warranted because my condition had gotten worse. After a surgical consultation and a second opinion, I had my surgery on July 27.
Yesterday was my two month anniversary! The surgery was tough for me. I had post operative anemia and that made me super weak. I am so thankful for my wife and grown kids who took the time to care for me---especially during those first few weeks. Now I am back at work (part-time), in cardiac rehab, and exercising (walking, light weights) everyday. I am especially grateful for the visiting nurses who aided me in those first days back home!
I am so glad I got this done! I still have some rehab ahead of me, but am feeling stronger everyday. My best suggestion is to shore up your support system---get your loved ones on board--they may need you too someday!
