About Me (In My Own Words)
Diagnosed in August 2013 (age 36) with mitral valve [bileaflet] prolapse which had caused severe regurgitation and enlargement of my heart. The condition was detected during a routine OB/GYN exam with a nurse practitioner, who heard a heart murmur and brought it to my attention. Upon examination by cardiologist, frequent PVC's were detected as well. I had no symptoms of which I was aware at the time, due to the assumed gradual progression of the disease. Surgery was recommended ASAP, and robotic surgery with the DaVinci was scheduled with Dr. Doug Murphy in Atlanta, GA 3 months later. Surgery was successful, with a short recovery (3 weeks +/-) and full return of heart function and size. Thankfully we caught it in time to prevent permanent damage. Echocardiograms are required annually to monitor going forward. I also take baby aspirin daily and require antibiotics prior to any dental work.
In July 2014 (7 months post-op), I discovered I was pregnant with my 3rd child. Pregnancy is progressing well, with no expected cardiac complications.
