I just discovered this site! I am in the process of committing to having surgery. One of my biggest decisions is where to have the surgery. I have seen a surgeon at Duke but I am second guessing if Duke is the very best choice for such a rare surgery. It would be a hardship to travel elsewhere. I am lucky to have a great medical facility so close to home. Can anyone give me input if it would truly benefit me to go elsewhere?

Joey Hardee Hi Barbara. I looked at a number of hospitals and surgeons and I chose Duke. I felt comfortable with my choice of surgeon and hospital. Duke is a great hospital and they do a lot of heart surgeries there, all the way up to transplants. That being said, you have to be very comfortable with what is right for you and your particular diagnosis. I did send all my imaging to Cleveland Clinic and had it seemed possible that I would be a candidate for an aortic valve repair procedure, I would have chosen CC. My thought is that the place and surgeon should have lots of experience in your particular surgery. Good luck!

Michael Andreas I highly recommended Dr. Patrick Mccarthy (my surgeon for Bicuspid Aortic Valve & Ascending Aortic Aneurysm Surgery on Nov 22, 2017). Best doctor I could get to. Use this web site and you internet search to find the best surgeon for your special needs. Always get a second opinion! If you find your best surgeon in another city, air or rail travel is reasonable with your care giver.
