We have fine hospital systems here in Rockford Illinois where I live. I have decided however to travel 275 mile to Mayo clinic rank #2 in the nation to get my procedure done. Originally Mayo's had scheduled me to come June 13th for tests and consultation with surgeon and on June 14 operation. Well I wanted more time than just 24 hours to decide or feel better about valve choice. I was able to get June 3rd for the tested and consultation then June 14 for surgery. The nurse didn't think I would want to be driving back and forth, I said that's okay no problem!...lol

I have a question for people with both type of aortic valve replacements. I work for a large company that is the color "BROWN" and do a lot of heavy lifting. Has anyone else here been able to go back to a heavy manual labor job? Mechanical or Bio valve?

Clare Auten Since no one else has answered, I will. I don't do heavy lifting but also didn't before surgery. I have "no restrictions" and can do whatever I did before surgery, and more. I have an On-X mechanical valve. I would ask your surgeon. Your type of job for that Brown company may require more recovery.

Rita Savelis I understand that when you get through your post-surgery recovery period (which really various in length of time) you can go back to any kind of work. However, if it's heavy manual labor you will usually need a longer recovery time and perhaps start back to work part time at first . Recovery can take awhile. It doesn't depend on the valves.
Your surgeon should really be able to answer this question because he probably has had patients who do all kinds of work.

Cathleen Weed I have a tissue valve but regardless of the valve extremely heavy lifting is discouraged due to the pressure on/through the valve. I have no limits with aerobic activity (except in the recovery period I had to limit my HR to 140 max) but I am told to not overdo the anaerobic weight lifting activity. You should definitely discuss with your doctor to see what is going to be allowed.
