I hate to be a bearer of negative news, but one needs to be aware of alternatives, especially when it involves YOUR heart. I always said that if I had a heart concern I would ONLY go to the Cleveland Clinic, in CLEVELAND. I did MUCH research and decided to see Lars Svennson MD. What a mistake. I spent a week at the CC undergoing all sought's of tests, met Dr. Svennson the last day. Being a Doctor myself, I am usually a skeptic, make my own decisions. Thank God. I passed on the AVR and CABG, I decided to concentrate on an electrical problem first. NOT a Dr. Svensson suggestion. I went to Austin Texas and saw the GREAT Dr. Natale. He removed the 35,000 extra beats in a 1 minute procedure. As a result, my EF went from 40 to 55 and the size of my Ventricle shrunk to within normal limits. The possibility of NOT requiring AVR and CABG is a reality. Maybe stents and a mini procedure, maybe nothing at all... Be ever vigilant. Doc
Steve Farthing Absolutely. Do research and get multiple opinions. Find out all the options.
Thanks for sharing! Research and 2nd opinions are a must!

Ruben Romero Thanks for the post. I wish I did more research before my first ARV and MVR. Now that I have two failing prosthetic valves after 7 years, it seems that's my options are super limited now. Planning on another tissue valve replacement hoping that there will be more options for me in the future.

Craig Wise Doc, yours is important info, and we all benefit from your posting it. I also was somewhat enamored with Lars S and the Cleve Clinic. Alas, I couldn't manage the travel logistics. Now, I'm 8 weeks post-op AVR, and I have severe sternal non-union, so another surgery to fix on Tuesday. Pleased to hear your journey went as it did.

Robert D'Aurora I was at CC last week for Pre Op for 3 days. The first 2 days with tests went well, like clockwork. I was disappointed on the last day that I met with the surgeon. I had a 12:30 PM appointment, but I didn't see the surgeon until almost 5pm. I was not pleased about that. I had a 4 hour drive after that.

Corey Sines I have found CC runs like clockwork, on everything except appointments with the Surgeon. This is my 2nd go around with them. I have not had the same experience here at other Hospitals around Columbus, OH (OSU, Mount Carmel, etc). Most of the CC Surgeons do their heart surgeries for the day first, then meet with new/other patients afterwards. So that probably meant someone that day had a much longer than anticipated surgery Robert. Still stinks waiting around that long..

Phyllis Petersen I had a wait for the surgeon and I hadn't had a chance to eat since the day before, except for a cereal bar I brought with me. There is a sign telling us to let them know if you are more than a half hour past your appointment time. Had I approached sooner I would have known that the surgeon was stuck in surgery and I could have gone and gotten lunch. By the time I asked, he was taking patients and I couldn't chance leaving.
