I would love to help any one with advice on care package to bring for the caregiver and the heart patients. I went through it alone and searched for a site like this but it didn't launch until after my son's surgery. I trusted my son's cardiologist and made sure I was Healthy and strong for him. It was torture leading up to the surgery I had terrible anxiety but I think I could give advice after my own life storm I just encountered. He's doing great and his aortic and mitral valve are stable. He's on little meds and is able to finally run with out stopping. Technology is amazing in 2015! When he was born in 2004 he couldn't have this done. Consider yourself lucky to have surgery in a day and age where you have so many choices and miraculous surgeons that can do a heart surgery many ways with their beautiful minds. This was not possible a few years ago..and technology keeps getting better. American Heart Association keeps coming up with new improved ideas. AMEN!

Terrie Syvertsen Hello there Emily. Kind of you to want advice on giving support to both the caregiver and patients. In my opinion I believe that the greatest gift you can give both the patient and the caregiver is You and your time.
The patient needs someone around who knows it is comforting just to have the company and someone to listen while more or less being in a recovery mode. The caregiver might just need someone to fill in for a time so that the patient can rest and they can have a few minutes of time to themselves. It is kind of you to want to offer your support and I hope your son continues doing well and healing continues.
