Ended up in the hospital the last two nights. I'm 5 weeks post op and was doing so well with everything. Started cardiac rehab last week which felt good. Really starting to feel some normalcy returning.
Went to the ER Monday with severe body aches and fever. Originally attributed the body aches to overdoing it last weekend. Finally talked some sense in to myself that these were not normal symptoms. Prior to surgery would have never gone to a doctor for this, but that fear of endocarditis is real! My white blood cell count was up along with a few other markers and fever was 102. So, admission it would be with full endocarditis workup. This thanks to the Cleveland Clinic after hours support for guiding my local hospital ER doc. The local cardiologist group didn't seem too concerned. Good reminder why I decided to go to CC.
Fast forward a couple of days and luckily most of the lab values are coming back to normal. Had a little scare with the echo. They thought there was vegetation on the valve indicative of endocarditis and they graded my newly repaired aortic valve as moderate regurgitation. It was mild after the repair. This freaked me out on many levels. They did a TEE (fun times) and it showed no vegetation and mild regurgitation. So, good news is they are saying no endocarditis. Still no idea what's going on but I'm actually ok with that knowing that valve seems ok.
I assumed there would be bumps in the road, but it's still disappointing. I should be discharged tomorrow if all goes well. Just have to get back on that horse and work even harder toward a healthy recovery. I wish you all the best in your recovery and those with future surgeries!
Brenda McC Hope you get home today and that your recovery is back on track!

Rose Madura Hi Eric. I'm sorry you had this scary setback. I was re-hospitalized 3 times so I know what you are going through. You seem to have the right attitude so that will help you along to a full recovery.
How scared. So happy that there no infection in the valve. What a relief.

Lynda Ruiz Hope you are out and back at it soon. Your mention of having your local hospital getting info from CC makes me think about if I need to go into my local AZ hospital (that I avoided) if they can contact Baylor Heart in Plano for info/assistance.

Eric Linnenburger Thanks everyone. I'm back home now and doing fine. Disappointed to be set back some but feel fortunate it wasn't Endocarditis. Just some unknown funky virus most likely. I did come out of the experience feeling even more fortunate for the care and expertise I received at the CC. I know these minor setbacks are very common. Now back onward towards recovery!

Hi everyone. Thanks so much for your messages, prayers, and well wishes! I had OHS on Monday, July 3rd, Dr Svensson at Cleveland Clinic, to repair my bicuspid aortic valve. The repair was successful which means no replacement at this time which I was so hoping for. I got discharged this afternoon. That meant only 4 nights in hospital! All went well. I will post a full update in the near future. Todays the first day I've fealt I could focus on a screen, so taking baby steps.

Jill Krajnovich So glad to hear all went well and you are already out of the hospital, Eric! I am having my surgery with Dr Svensson at CC on July 25 and am definitely a little nervous so was happy to hear how smoothly things have gone for you. Enjoyed the blog entry, gave me a little more insight. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Eric Linnenburger Jill, oh do I get the being nervous part! Just know that you will be in the best possible hands. It goes beyond just Dr Svensson, too. The rest of that surgical team is impressive. Some things will just suck and you just get through it. For the most part, though, I still find myself saying, "did I really just have open heart surgery"? Please let me know if you have any questions or I can help in any way.

Jill Krajnovich Thanks, Eric, for all your feedback. It is so great getting to chat with you and others who have went through OHS but your story is especially meaningful to me as yours was essentially the same surgery at the same hospital with the same doctor. Love getting that first hand experiece information! I will continue to read your posts/blog and if I think of anything else, I will be sure to ask.
