Hi everyone! I’m 2.5 years post isolated tricuspid valve replacement surgery (done at age 44 for a congenital defect), now very unfortunately with this Edwards LifeSciences bioprosthetic valve failing. I’m looking to get my Covid booster as I’m 6 mos out from my last (those three all Pfizer). It’s been recommended to me to switch to Moderna, as it’s best to mix them. I’d like to get some input from my Heart Valve community 🙂

Gina G Thank you, Rose. My doctors won’t actually give me an opinion on the vaccines, which is very frustrating. A nurse at the cardiologist’s office who handles my Coumadin (not my congenital cardiologist) recommended mixing them up, however.

Hello everyone! New here (and not happy to be part of the OHS club) but I am grateful this site exists. I’m in my mid-40s and am 3-mos post-op isolated tricuspid valve replacement for a congenital problem (a variant of Ebstein’s anomaly), severe TR and right ventricular enlargement. My surgery was performed minimally invasively (thoracotomy via right breast). While I am immensely thankful to God that things went well from a technical standpoint, I’m still struggling in the aftermath. I have lots of neuropathy type discomforts which I feel is due to the type of surgery I had.
I’m wondering if there’s anyone out there who has had a minimally invasive valve surgery who may be able to offer me some input?

Hi Gina, no I didn’t have minimally invasive, I had the big one three weeks ago today. I am also very grateful that I survived the surgery and I am in the recovery stage no matter how difficult it might get. Hang in there and strong in the faith and always trust God’s plans for you. They are always perfect. Blessings

Rita Savelis Minimally invasive (which I didn't have) can leave one with as much discomfort as OHS, especially as a woman when the entrance is through your breast. Surgery can go perfectly well, but one can be still left with much discomfort to deal with, which does eventually pass. Please let your doctors know how you are feeling. I wish you all the best. Take care.

Gina G Thank you very much, Rita. It’s definitely true about the discomfort unfortunately. My surgery was done out of state and correspondence with them hasn’t gone all that well; they told me after the fact that everyone is different and it takes time. I wish I had been informed of all the possible side effects prior to my surgery...I did lots of research regarding my options, but the surgeon never mentioned a word about nerve damage & neuropathic symptoms. It is beyond frustrating.
Wishing you the best as well.

Catie B I'm very sorry for your suffering as nerve pain is very uncomfortable. And I hope that the issues can and will resolve before long. I am so sorry, too, for the long distance communication issues. My surgery was aortic and open, but afterward I struggled with a number of orthopedic issues I didn't expect. Unfortunately, it seems there are a plethora of potential side-effects and complications that can emerge from major surgery.

Rita Savelis I also wish I had known more about possible side-effects pre-surgery.... but ultimately one can't know which ones one will get. Most are "normal" reactions to major trauma on our hearts, bodies and minds. We expected to be fixed and feel better faster than we do/did. It's hard. I hear you. Knowing one is not alone and that others are experiencing similar effects can be comforting. Take Care Gina.

Gina G Thanks so much for the support and good wishes, Catie and Rita. It’s incredible the “odd” side effects both physically and mentally that can occur after OHS, resulting from the trauma to our heart, the bypass machine, etc. One day at a time, right?!
Hoping and praying for the best results and full recoveries for everyone walking this journey!
