I am 75 yes YOUNG I'm having cardiac cathertization Tues. Jan3 to prepare me for aortic valve replacement. Just brat breast Cancer in 15 bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction I was lucky they got it all.
I cannot take blood thinners or any pain killers orally due to previous gastric bypass. All any in clam stories even asprin cause gastric bleed. Have had to be given transfusions twice.
What do they do with me. I'm in a random trial to see if I have open heart or TAVR @ Duke University Hospital.
Just so concerned about anti coagulants or blood thinners.
I need to have this done before I can get my knee replacement.
Any info or words of wisdom so greatly appreciated.

Cathleen Weed I had TAVR last year due to 3 previous open heart surgeries. It's an amazing procedure and much easier recovery. If you qualify for TAVR they will give you a bioprosthetic bovine valve which shouldn't require anticoagulants. If you have OHS you can also request a bovine tissue valve. I don't see any reason why you would need a mechanical valve and blood thinners. Hope that helps. ☀️

Catie B Hi Jade, that is a tough place. I'm sorry for all you've been through. I understand to a large degree--like you, I can't take even enteric coated baby aspirin and surgeons wanted to steer me away from anticoagulants, if possible. I asked Dr. Gilinov of the Cleveland Clinic recently on a Q & A web chat whether all TAVRs require antiplatelet therapy (aspirin, Plavix, etc.) and he said yes. Perhaps your surgeon would help you do a trial run in advance of your surgery with one of the non-aspirin antiplatelet medications.
If you were to get a tissue valve and your heart stayed in normal sinus rhythm, you would not require Coumadin/warfarin. However, if you were to get post-operative atrial fibrillation (a frequent complication), the warfarin would be required.
I hope you and your surgeon can come up with the best plan possible.
Jade Bari Thank you so much for the information. However I really am encouraged by your caring.
Pam Monahan I had breast cancer twice and had TAVR two weeks ago Monday. Best wishes to you. We are survivors!

Cathleen Weed I only take a chewable baby aspirin (81mg) once daily after having had TAVR. That is all that is required unless you have another condition (A-fib etc). :)
