I had mitral valve regurgitation that was severe. I had mitral valve repair surgery on April 25th and it appeared that the problem was solved. However, three days after surgery an echo showed that there was trace regurgitation. I had an echo last week, eleven weeks after surgery, and it reported that I now have moderate mitral valve regurgitation. I'm getting in touch with my surgeon and cardiologist for answers. I'm concerned that the surgery wasn't successful. Has anyone else had a similar situation? Should I feel hopeful? Or, is it possible that I'm facing another surgery?
Richard Munson What a lousy thing to hear. Hopefully not another surgery.
Rose Madura I'm sorry to hear this Janet. Please let us know what the doctors say.

Klara Čičić Dear Janet, I was/am in a similar situation. My regurgitation after repair is 1-2+, before surgery it was 3-4. It is 9 months after surgery now for me, and situation is still the same. My repair was quite complex and unique, I knew before surgery that probability of 100% seal of leaflets was lower in people with Barlow disease, so it wasn't as big of a surprise after the surgery when they told me I have regurgitation left. Surgeon told me how peculiar my posterior leaflet was and that he considers my surgery extremly successful. Maybe in a less experienced hands I would've end up with replacement rather than repair? Glass is half full, right.... My future surely brings another surgery since I am so young, I just hope it's later rather than sooner... Anticipation from echo to echo is not fun, but it's our reality. I sympathize with you and hope your regurgitation won't progress ..

Klara Čičić My heart chambers are back to normal size as the heart remodelled postoperatively, so this trace-moderate regurgitation obviously doesn't have a great impact. At least not as big as before the surgery when atrium and ventricle were under much strain and dilated. Stay positive! Keep us updated.

It's been three weeks since my successful mitral valve repair surgery! The first week was a roller coaster and I had a lot of back pain, most likely from the awkward positioning of my right arm during minimally invasive surgery. I was discharged four days after surgery and needed some help at home for a few days. Day nine was the turning point. Suddenly, the pain subsided and I began to feel like myself. I began walking more and more, enjoying the beautiful spring weather. My incisions have healed very nicely and I feel more and more like myself every day. I start cardiac rehab in another week or so. I'm very glad that I had the surgery while I was asymtomatic and fit. It's making recovery so much easier than it might have been. I appreciate this website and all that I have learned from it and from fellow heart patients. Thank you!
Ana Brusso Congratulations Janet. Continued good health and recovery and God bless you

My surgery went very well yesterday. My surgeon, Dr. Sarin, was able to repair my mitral valve. I’m so grateful for this. He told me that the valve was leaking very badly. Although I was asymptomatic (except when hiking big hills!) it was definitely time to get this problem fixed. What a relief!
Richard Munson Yea, glad to hear you are on the upslope. Next goal getting back home. Godspeed.
Susan Lynn Yay!!! You did it, Janet! Wishing you a speedy recovery! The big hills await!!!

I'm having mitral valve repair surgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital on April 25, 2023. My surgeon is Dr. Sarin. I'm asymptomatic and watched my mitral valve for decades with no issues. Until September 2022. I went from mild regurgitation to moderate. A TEE showed moderate to severe. Time for surgery while I'm (relatively) young and healthy.
