I had open heart surgery 7 years ago to replace my aortic valve with a mechanical valve. Surgery went great and my new valve has been great. However; for the past few years I have developed AFIB and had to go through several cardioversions to convert back to sinus rhythm. I'm researching other options to treat my AFIB and I read about catheter ablation. Is catheter ablation a safe procedure and are there any complications due to having a mechanical aortic valve?

Jill Porter I developed persistent AFIB in 2020. I had a catheter ablation. The AFIB came back and I was put on cardizem and multaq which worked to control it for 3 years. At that time - 2023 - my mitral valve had progressed to severe and I had surgery. I went back into AFIB for 5 weeks following the surgery. With medications (amiodorone and metoprolol) it finally resolved. I am still on metoprolol and digoxin but have had no AFIB since. Long story short I think the ablation helped to get the Afib to the point it could be controlled with meds. Also I think my leaky valve was contributing. At this point I think they want me to go off the digoxin and are hoping my rhythm will stay stable. Good luck and keep searching until you find your answer.

I had Aortic Valve replacement surgery 4 years ago due to a Bicuspid Aortic valve that I was born with. The valve replacement surgery went great, however I am now dealing with AFIB. Since my valve surgery 4 years ago, I have gone into AFIB 4 times and each time a Cardioversion was performed to fix the AFIB. The Cardioversions have each worked for about 12 months and then the AFIB returned. My question is: Since I did have my Aortic Valve replaced with a mechanical valve, am I a candidate for ablation to treat the AFIB?
