Hi, everyone - I'm just past the 1-year mark from the mitral and aortic valve replacement surgery. (Mechanical valves.) Most days and nights are just fine now. However, on occasion, I have irregular and/or exceptionally strong pounding beats. Hard to describe, but I hope someone out there knows exactly what I'm trying to say. Anyway, it disturbs me greatly. Is the new normal supposed to be this weird? Has anyone else experienced this? If so, I would really appreciate your insights about what to do and not do when this happens. Thank you very much!

W. Carter Yep it seems to be the new norm. I'm 10 mo. post op and still get the clicking and thumping. Depending on which way I sit or lay it is either loud clicking and strong pounding or none at all. I had the mech. valve and ascending aortic sleeve inst. On a brighter note I am feeling excellent, better than I have in years, so I can live with it.

Cris Dykeman I just saw the doc about this today! I'm almost 1 year from avr & aneurysm repair. Doc said the irregularities cone from too much caffeine, alcohol or stress typically. I can hear my valve 24/7 so when it sounds weird it freaks me out. I get the loud thumping when Im congested.
Doc said if it sounds irregular (not just fast) or continues then to call.

Nancy D had a routine PCP appointment last week and I told him the same thing....about 3 weeks ago, I noticed my heart rate not being its regular behind the scenes normal, but I was aware it was irregular, and sometimes rapid. He said it was like taking your car to the shop- it won't ever do what you want them to hear and fix when you go in. He said that unless I was symptomatic - weak, dizzy, sweating, short of breath- that I shouldn't worry about it. Everyone had slight irregularities to heart rate and rhythm depending on activity, stress, sinus medications, exercise, dehydration etc...... but once we have been through heart surgery we are always more aware and look at any variant from the normal as a potential problem. Anything sustained and causing symptoms should be addressed, but rare and random variations......don't worry about it.....easy for him to say! ;-)

Karen F thank you all for responding so quickly and in such detail. You have helped a lot. I'm sure there will be worries in the future and it's so nice to know that you are out there, and that you folks understand this whole experience. P.S. To Nancy D's comment...don't you just love it when someone who doesn't have your problem tells you "don't worry about it" ?!
