I had a Mitral valve repair last year. Ironically, it appears that my mom was just diagnosed with Mitral Regurgitation. She is 85, very active and in otherwise excellent health (most people look at her and think she is 70). She wants either a repair or replacement vs. a Mitra Clip.
My question is that due to her age, would a tissue valve be a better option than a repair in her case?

Rose Madura Hi Kenneth. Wow. An active 85 year old mother. I have no idea as to your question but would recommend talking to the cardiologist and surgeon to see what their advice would be. May so some research online as well. There are articles Ion this site. So a search on "Mitral repair in elderly".God bless you both and please keep us posted.

Tom Everson Hi. I BELIEVE ROSE is spot on , the cardiologist/ surgeon opinion is what you need to start with. I also believe original equipment usually is better but a lot of surgeons do not have the expertise for a repair. Ask about their experience and also why they suggest their action plan. Klara Čičić Kenneth, your mum is very lucky women having lived that long. Repair is always a first option so it depends on the state in which her valve is. If repair is very likely, and the surgeon is experienced, I believe they will try. But if she is too fragile for opet heart surgery, then MitraClip sounds like reasonable option.

About a month before my mitral valve repair surgery, I had a finding on a stress echo of "global hypokinesis of the left ventricle" under exercise. My cardiologist thought that it more than likely meant that my heart muscle was not getting enough blood and that I may need a stent or a bypass. However, when he did the catheterization, they found that my heart arteries were amazingly clear. This is probably more of a result of me drawing a lucky genetic card than diet or lifestyle, as while I get some exercise and have never smoked, I definitely don't eat enough fruits and vegetables.
Anyway, I can't seem to find out much about global hypokinesis of the left ventricle other what I have been told and that it only shows up on a stress echo which I have not had since and that was the only one I had in my life. Does anyone know if that could have been something caused by mitral valve regurgitation and may hopefully correct over time?
