Hi, I had my open heart mitral valve repair on August 19th, 2015 and it went well for the most part. They had to repair both my anterior and posterior leaflets and the connecting cords as well since they were all stretched out. They had trouble getting the right side of my heart to pump following surgery, which required use of the paddles and a balloon put into the right side of my heart for the first 24-48 hours to support my heart until the right side got stronger.
Now within the last month to month and a half I can feel and hear my sternum popping, shifting, and a cracking type feeling with any type of movement, even just breathing. My surgeon ordered an x-ray of my chest about a week ago which he said looked fine, but is now ordering a CT scan of my chest due to the popping, cracking and moving feeling that keeps happening, as well as a sharp pain to the lower left side of my sternum that happens with certain movements or pressure on that area. I am also having an accompanying sharp pain in between my shoulder blades but more to the right side. Has anyone experienced anything similar? I am completely lost at what this could be. Any info would help!

Sophia Ridley Hi Kristen, I have had a mitral value repair and goretex cords inserted. I have a genetic connective tissue disorder called Ehlers Danlos Hypermobility Syndrome (which is associated with MVP - I mention more on other journals).
I am concerned that EDS will impact my recovery from the operation as the ligaments have been stretched during the surgery. I can't sleep on my side as my collarbone moves and is very painful when I wake, and my left shoulder blade is sore when sleep flat. I feel that my collarbone doesn't sit quite where it did. My shoulders always had considerable movement but now will click and pop. I'm going to contact the EDS consultant and see if I can speak with their Physio. I had muscle manipulation which straightened me out last week, but I expect I'll be given exercises to gain strengthen and stability.

I was in the E.R. on Sunday (overnight in observation) was having bad palpitations, weakness, and shortness of breath...more so than usual. Everything ended up being fine other than what we already know which is that I have bi-leaflet mitral valve prolapse with severe regurgitation; so both leaflets have to be repaired. I finally got a call from the surgeons office today; my consultation with him will be on Monday, July 20th, 2015 at 2:30pm. I am now, officially, nervous. I am starting to feel a lot more comfortable though with my surgeon, I've heard great things about him, and my research is paying off since I've been able to find out better things about him. I look forward to having my heart fixed; I definitely don't look forward to recovering from open heart surgery, but it is what it is.

I just had my TEE and Angiogram done on July 2, 2015...I definitely have to have Mitral Valve repair of both the anterior and posterior leaflets, and it will be done by open heart surgery. I'm trying to find out more about my surgeon, Dr. Daniel Ciaburri in Peoria, IL, formerly from New York...I'm having trouble finding any patient reviews of him, which is making me rather nervous. Any tips or ideas?

Ray Lockhart Kristen, Have you checked out healthgrades.com to see how your hospital and surgeon is rated for valve surgery? When I was first recommended for surgery, my cardio highly recommended a surgeon who, it turned out was one of his partners. I talked with him but quickly broadened my search for a surgeon and a hospital to find someone that I could have more confidence in. If you can, I would consider one of the hospitals suggested in Adams list of heart hospitals and a surgeon included in his surgeon finder (see the blue ribbon at the top of the page). There should be choices which are not too distant from Peoria. It is hard to feel good about going into surgery if you do not have confidence in your surgeon and the hospital where the surgery will take place. I selected a hospital 450 miles distant and will be driving there for surgery on Monday. Good luck.

Bob M Kristen, please consider Chicagoland heart hospitals such as Northwestern Medicine. My aortic valve replacement was last December 10. My surgery was textbook and my recovery was uneventful. Central DuPage Hospital was like a resort. When I retire, I will volunteer at the Cardiac wing. God bless with your decision.
Kristen Musgrove Thank you for the information. I will do some research and check with my insurance company as well.
Kristen Musgrove Thank you for the information, I will continue to do my research.

I just heard from my Cardiologist office yesterday and they said they're sending out the paperwork regarding my pretesting which is coming up on July 2nd! I have to have a TEE (Transesophageal Echocardiogram) and an Angiogram done that day so the doctors can get a better look at my valves. I've never had either of these tests before so, naturally, I'm a little nervous.

Tammy Pilcher Hi Kristen, it's nice to meet you and I'll be praying for you and your son. You've been through so much already and I can only imagine how difficult it would be to go through all of this at the same time your son is fighting his own battle. It is good to read of your faith, because God does know of everything you're facing and He will see you through. Proverbs 3:5-6 says "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.". God bless you and your family!

Cheryl Batzing Kristen--amen to everything Tammy said! I had my mitral valve repaired in Dec. and was very nervous as well about the TEE and angiogram.....but in retrospect it was not a big deal....the nervousness was a bit of not knowing what to expect. keep asking questions! Since your sister has been through this, you probably already know alot. Will keep you and your family, and your son in my prayers.
Kristen Musgrove Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the kind words.
