Went to see my surgeon last evening and aortic valve re-replacement and modified cox-maze procedure is scheduled for December 14th. Decided to go with bio-valve this time instead of another mechanical. I know this may sound strange to some people, but I’m excited to get this surgery done...I’m so looking forward to getting my beaching, boating, active life back and not being so exhausted all the time...and the best part is no blood thinners anymore! Woo-hoo!

Meeting with surgeon this Wednesday to discuss valve replacement options. I’m not nervous or apprehensive, more curious to see how the valves have changed in the last 24 years. Should be interesting! However, my husband has turned into a raving lunatic about this (these are his own words to describe himself - he’s a VERY funny guy!) I feel bad for him...first replacement he said “there’s nothing I can do while you’re in surgery, so I’ll just go to work...” This time he’s pretty freaked out.

Marie Myers Probably a lot has changed on valve options in the last 24 yrs. Just curious, is a tissue valve an option after a mechanical valve? Hoping your hubby finds some peace during the waiting period...

Lisa Burck Hi Marie! Thank you for your kind thoughts! To answer your question, yes, bioprosthetic is an option, which is great news to me! No more Coumadin!

Got my nuclear stress test today...only able to do 3 mins on treadmill. Completely pissed me off! Last year at this time I would go 30 mins at 3.5 mph on a 20% grade...guess things have progressed further than I had figured with my
artificial valve dysfunction. All I can do now is patiently wait for results. Fingers crossed.

Catie B I'm so sorry for these changes. One surgery is scary and I know the prospect of a second is very daunting. I have a tissue valve and the three surgeons I consulted in 2016 all believed that second surgeries performed in a center of excellence are very safe. Technology continues to advance, and the frequency for some surgeons performing very complex surgeries is amazing. Hang in there.

Lisa Burck Thank you Catie! I sure will! It’s the waiting part that bugs me the most, but I did get a call from the Cardiologist today moving my follow up to discuss results to Monday from Thursday so three less days of waiting (looking for the silver lining!)
Catie B Three days less before learning more, is good. For sure, waiting is stressful!

Hi-I’m new this site. I had my aortic valve replaced in 1994 with a St Jude valve (congenital birth defect along with stenosis) I had an echocardiogram done this past Friday and of course, I will be sitting in pins and needles until I get the results. Anyway, I’m wondering if any of you have had a re-replacement surgery on your valves. I’m trying to find info on this and it’s kind of frustrating because the info I find seems to be aimed at initial valve replacements, not re-replacements (if that’s even a word!) Any insight or info would be very much appreciated!

Steven Dean I had a second surgery on my aortic valve after a failed repair and will have a third at some point since I got a cow valve. The surgery has come some ways where second surgeries at not nearly as risky as they used to be and are closer to first surgeries.

Was the repair done on a mechanical valve? How did you know it needed to be repaired?
Lisa Burck BTW, Steven, I want to thank you for replying to my post! I appreciate it more than you know!

Steven Liebowitz Lisa, my cardiac surgeon (Dr. Mehall in Colorado Springs) replaced my aortic valve 4 weeks ago with a cow valve. He said should I require another valve in the future, he would not need to do open heart surgery, but could place the replacement valve through the femoral artery. The replacement valve would be fitted into my first valve.

Lisa Burck I have read about that. That’s pretty awesome that you wouldn’t have to be opened up again! I figure if I do need a replacement, regardless of the valve type I choose, they still would have to crack the sternum to get the mechanical one out. Ugh. Maybe I can get a boob lift at the same time? My twusted humor gets me through all t this waiting! (Apologies if it offends...)
