I am very frustrated. I found out about a month ago that I have Severe Aorta Stenosis and a bicuspid valve. It seems the cardiologist is leaning toward the Tavr procedure. I am 66. From everything I have read about bicuspid valves and Tavr,, there have not been significant data collected for my age group, and many surgeons still feel it is too early to tell if it is a good choice. I am going for the CT Scan workup for Tavr tomorrow. I am assuming I fall into the moderate risk group for Tavr to even be an option. Very overwhelming right now.

Hello Lola, welcome to our site. I’m hoping some of our heart warriors will respond to your post. From what I have read on this site you seem to be too young to go for a TAVR procedure. Have you considered getting a second or third opinion? I got three before I decided to travel to Los Angeles to have my surgery with Dr. Vaughn Starnes at KECK USC. If you are not completely sure see if you can see another cardiologist. Good luck and God bless you

Rose Madura I concur with Ana. You must feel comfortable with your doctor and with your journey. I got 4 opinions- all were the same but at least I felt I was well informed and confident in my surgery. My 2nd opinion led me to a new cardiologist whom I love. Definitely worth it.

Susan Lynn Lola - I agree with Ana and Rose about multiple opinions. But, if you are a candidate for TAVR, you will be facing a much less invasive procedure and a quick recovery than surgical correction would require. Wishing you all the best with your testing and research. You might want to ask for a copy of your CT just in case you see another surgeon. Make the decision that's right for you.

Jose Villarreal Hi Lola, I also had bicuspid valve with Aortic stenosis. I was told I was not a candidate for TAVR from my cardiologist and two reputable heart surgeons mainly because of Bicuspid valve. I went with a minimally invasive aortic valve replacement through a mini thoracotomy, After 19 days I am back at work. Don't be afraid to ask questions and be comfortable with with your decision. Good luck in process. If you need advice I am here for you.

Nancy Chavez Hi Lola
I am younger than you and had TAVR last year. I was low risk but did not have any other cardiac issues that needed repair so TAVR was recommended. I am now able to do so much more and my heart is in much better shape. I am playing in a tennis match tonight and no longer on any meds only the baby aspirin. I have a great cardiologist who sees me every 6 months and so far so good. I agree to look at your options and get the workup to see what the best choice for you!

Lola Whitworth You will never know how much I appreciate all of you responding. I was so afraid no one would. I had the Tavr work up on Monday but have not heard anything back from the cardiologist. I will call the office today. He is a new Cardiologist for me so I do not know him except he is supposed to be the best in Greenville. He has tentatively scheduled me for the procedure 2 weeks from now but I was hoping he was taking some time to speak with the surgeon to decide if that was still the best option for me. I did read the report and it seems everything looks good. I am still very frustrated but am trying to keep positive. Thank you all again.
