Hi, I’m Melanie, I’m 64 and I have severe Mitro Valve Regurgitation. I was diagnosed at age 36 and I haven’t had any problems until last year. My echo shows I’m a level 4 and I’m getting a echo every 6 months. I’m on the watch list. My only symptom is exhaustion. I live in Sarasota Fl and I’ve heard great reviews about Dr Jonathan Hoffberger as a Thoracic surgeon. My heart doctor says I’m not ready for surgery but at stage 4 I think it’s time for a second opinion
I enjoy reading all your comments and success stories. Thank you for all your inspiration.

Deena Z Ditto, Rose's opinion!! (It's your heart). I got three opinions when I had severe mitral valve regurg. When my L ventricle became slightly dilated, I had the surgery.

Dorothea Mansdorfer Hi Melanie, other than me being 62, your story is identical to mine. I got a new cardiologist that referred me to Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles. I go in for my repair in TWO hours. I'll let you know my recommendation tomorrow LOL

Susan Lynn Melanie - There are differing opinions on timing for mitral valve surgery. The thing we do know is that the valve doesn't get better on its own. I agree with our heart warriors above - get another opinion or two. You'll want to interview surgeons and take your time making your decisions. Your cardiologist should fully expect that you'll seek additional feedback. Good luck with your research!

Ginny Turner Hi Melanie and welcome to the most amazing information and support group! I'm also a mitral valve patient, scheduled for mitral and tricuspid repair at the Cleveland Clinic in January. My story is similar to yours - I'm 72, was diagnosed many years ago with mitral valve prolapse, but it's never been a problem. I feel well and don't have symptoms except for a lot of PVCs, which don't bother me. The recommendation to have surgery came as a complete surprise. I had no idea so much was going on with my heart. I agree with the comments above to seek a second opinion. In my case, my first and second opinions differed considerably. Now, I feel certain I am making the right decision, even traveling from Texas to Cleveland for the surgery. Best of luck to you as you learn more and feel empowered to make the choice that is right for you!
