Hello I am 10months now out of surgery open heart valve replacement.
I am still suffering with sternum/rib cage pain and left breast and sternum scar soreness.
Can anyone tell me that this is just part of the healing proocess. I find it very distressing, as I am still out of breath after very little effort, and find it all very frustrating !
It would be nice to share others experiences, as It is a lonely place and I really don't think my family understand my feelings !!

Rita Savelis Yes, this is part of the healing process. I got out of breath for a long time after surgery. And I still am very aware of my sternum/rib cage, although it's not really pain. Let your doctor know how you are feeling the next time you see him/her, but know that recovery can take a long time, and each person has their "normal".
It can very difficult 10 months later to have support from family and friends because as far as they are concerned you made it through surgery and you are fine. OHS stays with you, physically and emotionally, for a long time so you need outlets where you can express yourself. This site can be helpful, but it can also be difficult when others seem to bounce back more quickly than you.
But it is through others with similar experiences that you can find listeners.
I also found therapy helpful as a place to work out what I had been through.
I hear you Michèle. Wishing you some peace.

Rose Madura I would assume it is all part of the healing process. You've had major surgery and recovery is different for everyone. I too have some sternum pain still and I'm 8 months out. I agree with Rita - family and friends seem to be done talking about it but to me and my husband, every day is a day to thank the Lord for the technology and faith to know that it will get better - month by month.

Hi Adam
On 30th of March this year I had open heart surgery, aortic valve replacement, and on April 4th they decided I needed a pace maker.
Almost 9 months and I am still suffering with rib and chest soreness.
My main concern is I am out of breath and feel worse than before the surgery. I am feeling concerned !! My cardiologist has said they want to have a look with a camera I believe e it is a TOE to check on the wiring.
I am of course worried. Do you have any advice , or any thoughts !!
Thank you

Michele Lamb The pain in Left/central where the scar is, stinging and very sore, could it be nerve pain, I find some days are worse than others, but the pacemaker doesn't help in the left shoulder area, very sore also. The pace maker specialist said I should give it a while longer and see if it gets any better, if not he will make an appointment with the cardiologist.
All so long and drawn out in UK we wait so long to see doctors. NHS has become so overworked we are struggling here. Our doctors and surgeons are good but unless you pay privately and it is expensive!! We have to wait on NHS.

Gerald Poulton Hi Michele, I would suggest you go to your doctors for a check. I am 7 weeks post surgery and have no real pain and although not as fit as I was before, I dont really have a lot of exhaustion.
As for the heart beat, how fast is yours and what kind of valve did you get ? I got an Edwards Bovine tissue valve, my resting heart rate is faster than it was before but I understand that is normal. As for hearing or feeling your heart beat, my heart beat also feels a lot stronger and louder, especially when I fill my lungs and hold my breath. I visited my internal medicine specialist and he said it is normal, the tissue valve is louder than your own and you also dont have the leak or regurgitation anymore so it is more open and close and definite than the woosh we had before. Take care and when you in doubt, check it out

I am still finding it difficult to breath properly after exertion, and am still in pain. I was expecting to feel much better and have mor energy after the surgery as it is now 4 months ago. My ribs are still sore and my chest feels tight still, although the external scars have healed well, they are still tender with some nerve discomfort,
I think you should see a cardiologist that’s does not sound normal
Marie Myers What does your primary doc say about these symptoms?
Jennifer McInerney So sorry this is happening to you. I would see your Cardiologist for sure.

I still feel out of breath after exertion.
My chest felt tight for a long time, even if I wasn't in pain. It still feels tight often (2 years later).
Cardiologists say I am fine, so I have accustomed myself to these symptoms.
I think you will eventually feel better, but it is still very early. Take it easy. Take care.
