3 weeks after my Mitral Valve Repair at Providence St. Vincent in Portland Oregon and I can't thank the team at the hospital for the excellent care I received. I was scared and riddled with anxiety going into this, but the whole experience from Surgeon Consult, to Pre-Op and ICU and Hospital stay of 5 day's was very impressive.
I was walking by the 2nd day - 1/2 mile, 4th day 1 mile (laps on the 8th floor) and 5th day 2miles (laps on the 8th floor), 1st week I was walking 2-3 miles daily, 2nd week 3-4miles daily and 3rd week, I just walked my first 3mile segment and now walk 6miles daily. Being active and relatively healthy (Exception my heart) going into this helped me in my recovery.
Don't get me wrong I have my issues: insomnia, AFib Medication side affects (dizziness and blurred vision), and pain management, or i should say discomfort. I was off Oxy by day 3 in hospital and since then have only been taking Tylenol. Each day is better than the next, taking naps 2-3 times daily really has helped me keep my energy and focus on walking and keeping my heart and blood moving. The big bolder on my chest has loosened its grip and I'm finally in week 3 breathing without too much discomfort...
For those going into surgery - if your not walking daily, start and get into some good practices before going in for surgery. That I believe was my savings grace in my recovery.. I was walking already and had some good memory muscle to rely on post op.
Marie Myers A very good post for everyone gearing up for their surgery!

Michael Keefe Agree on the walking, I used to run half marathons regularly prior to discovering the aortic aneurysm and valve issues. After my surgery (sternotomy also) I was walking miles only weeks after surgery. Doctors amazed how quickly I recovered. No doubt better shape going in will help in the recovery process.

Darren Ketchley Hi michelle. Congratulations on coming through yr surgery and with a positive attitude. I also had a mitral repair. I ended up with afib post op and was on the nasty drug ameoderone and my vision was affected so i point blank refuse to take it ever again. Im having ablation in 2 weeks and have coped without any meds at all. I manage my paraxsysmal af through healthy life style and regular long walks with hills. I have found that researching the pills before putting faith in them has helped immensley. My bp is a constant 115/72 or there abouts. And loosing 15kg in weight.never smoked has also been a bonus. Good luck with the rest of yr journey

Michelle King I'm on Ameoderone, but they reduced my dose since I too was having dizzy spells and double/blurred vision. Still on it for another 2 weeks, but the side affects seems to have improved. My Cardiologist listened to my concerns and we reduced the amt. significantly, enough to ensure my AFib does not come back, so far so good. I've not heard good things about this drug though.

9 days till surgery, this whole process is very stressful. Waiting 6 weeks for surgery to take place feel like a year. Luckily I have a guide who's been assigned to me and I've got so many questions about Post Op Recovery, what to expect and how quickly I can resume normal life activities, like walking daily 5 miles +?
I put a goal our there for myself to walk 10miles on my 60th birthday on October 9th (just shy of 3 months), but friends are telling me to not aim for so many miles. I've been known to walk 8-12 miles 2 times a week but I've recently cut back (listening to my heart and symptoms) I have no idea what is normal and how quickly your heart heals, don't want the repair breakdown...
Anyone out there who's really active and has guidance on how they recovered, what was the regime to getting back to a normal exercise routine would be appreciated.

Heart Warrior I am three weeks out and walking pretty briskly. I am limited by the soreness from where my chest tube was and where the robotic arms were. Best advice is be in the best shape you can before surgery. I was swimming 3x week before surgery and that helps

Mike Roskowinski Hey Michelle. Waiting is the worst part. It seems to take so long. I am 9 weeks out of surgery and have been walking 6-8 miles a day and light workouts at the gym. Also cardio rehab 3 days a week. I was in pretty good shape heading into surgery. I was in the hospital for two weeks and they only let me walk in my unit during this time. I was doing 4 laps 5 times a day at week 2. Walked my first mile after week 3. I started cardio rehab at 4 weeks and am already almost graduated. I can jog/run now so they are changing my workout there to watch my heart at a higher intensity. I would say by 3 months you should be back to doing your walks. I am ready to go back to golfing in a few weeks. Everyone heals differently but I think you will be able to do it. Good luck with surgery and we will see you on the recovery side

Tracy Fallu Hi Michelle,
I am a runner and like you wanted to know when I would be able to run a designated amount of miles. What I realized is that everyone’s recovery is different and therefore difficult to say “when” you’ll be able to. Please make sure you participate in Cardiac Rehabilitation and let them know your walking goal. They will work with you and help you reach what your body is able to tolerate. Keep a great mindset and you WILL get there at some point after recovery. Best of luck. We look forward to you posting walking pictures as you progress.
