I’m now 8 weeks post OHS, feeling a lot better, pretty much back to my normal routine, but I am still very tired. I had rehab yesterday (just finished week 2). Later that night we went out to dinner with friends and the. to a brewery (I didn’t drink). And I was exhausted. We had to walk up some stairs and I felt like I did BEFORE surgery! It was very disappointing. We got home about 10:30 and I went straight to bed. Is it normal to still struggle with fatigue like this at 2 months?

Ann Crone Hi there, I've been waiting for an update for you since we are about the same time out from surgery! I just completed 1 week of cardiac rehab. I too feel MUCH better and am doing a lot but YES, I get very fatigued on some days and I'm usually done by about 9:30 or 10 pm at night, sometimes earlier, and just go to bed or read in bed. My cardiologist says energy and stamina come back with time. Oddly enough, even though I dragged myself to cardiac rehab yesterday, I felt better afterwards. I don't feel fatigued when I'm exercising, only when I've exercised and then I'm just sitting around. I'm still on 200 mg of amiodarone and 40 mg of a statin. Hoping the amio will go away in 2 weeks.

Susan Richards I’m the same with the exercising. I’m really tired even walking across the parking lot but once I get started on the machines I’m a lot better and feel better right afterward. When I got home, I worked in my office a little bit, then got ready to go out and by 9:00 we were going into a brewery in an old church and I didn’t think I was going to make it up the 2 flights of stairs. My friend asked if I wanted to go up a couple more flights to the balcony and I’m like NO.
MY husband says I’m just very out of shape but I can’t help but start worrying- maybe everything’s not ok with my heart, maybe the valve is failing, maybe I’ll be this way for the rest of my life.
So later when we got home, I went straight to bed with tears in my eyes.
I have a wedding to go to tonight! Let’s hope that goes better!
I did have over 7000 steps on my Fitbit yesterday and that’s a record for me!
Hopefully, you’ll be off the Amiodarone soon. I got taken off a couple weeks ago and definitely feel better.

Susan Lynn Susan - We have more in common than just our first names! I felt exhausted for a very long time after surgery. I work from home, so I could take a little power nap in the afternoon, otherwise, I was completely wiped out. I spent decades sitting at a desk and was always tall and thin, so I didn't do any significant amount of exercise. (My husband also tells me I'm out of shape!) I went to cardiac rehab and still go twice a week to the extended class. However, I noticed that I still felt winded climbing stairs. I thought the same thing - did the procedure fail? Well, a stress test last week revealed that everything is fine. My test was normal. Apparently, leg strength is as important as heart strength! You'll get there - but it takes time. Once you're off the medication, you're likely to see an increase in your energy, too. I'm changing up my workout and have already noticed a bit of difference. You'll get there. Be patient with your recovery. All the best!

Susan Richards Thanks Susan! Yes, stairs are bad and inclines, like when you increase the incline on the treadmill. I also work from home so not a lot of movement going on there, and I take afternoon naps as well, or at least lay down and rest, and I’ve noticed if I don’t do that I’m exhausted at night - like barely able to trudge up the stairs to bed. I guess we do have a lot in common. How long ago was your surgery?

Susan Lynn Susan - My surgery was in December of 2017. But, I remember early into cardiac rehab when they were increasing the incline to 2.5 it was tiring in 10 minutes. You'll build up your strength and endurance. Now, I walk for 30 to 40 minutes alternating the incline from 4 to 7. I hope to increase it further over time. You'll get there. Also, make sure you're breathing as you walk up the stairs - many people breathe differently or even tend to hold their breath under exertion You're going to be fine with a little time, too. ❤

Seven weeks post op and started rehab this week. So far, so good! I had an appointment yesterday with the “electrician cardiologist” about the atrial flutter I had in the hospital. He took me off of the dreaded Amiodarone and the Pradaxa. I’m SO GLAD!!
At 7 weeks I’m still tired a lot and still have the annoying, aching, prickly, burning, sternum and incision but all in all, looking back over the last seven weeks, things have improved dramatically. It’s a slow and steady marathon, not a short sprint.
Best wishes, thoughts, and prayers to all of you in the waiting room and post op. If I can do it, you definitely can!

Tomorrow is the 6 week mark post op for me. Six weeks ago I thought this day would never come because I assumed at 6 weeks I would be “healed” and back to my normal self.
And looking back I have come a long way and made a ton of progress.
However, my idea of what 6 weeks would look like was a little optimistic. I’m doing a lot better but certainly not back to normal. I’m still tired a lot, still can’t sleep comfortably on my side.
My sternum pain has improved quite a bit, but my incision has been bothering me more for some reason.
I’m walking more, driving, and going out more, plus back to work full time (I work from home).
As far as my mental health is concerned, I still don’t feel like I’m back to myself yet. I’m still more anxious than normal and can cry very easily, even if it’s really not something sad. (For example, my little 5 month old grandson wore jeans and actual shoes for the first time. The waterworks started. Another example, I was actually afraid to go back to church at week 4 because I was worried I'd cry when people talked to me about the surgery.). I also seem to get my feelings hurt very easily.
All in all, I’m moving forward at 6 weeks and realize it’s a slow and steady progression.
I start Cardio rehab in a week and I’m counting on that moving my recovery along even more.

Ann Crone Wow Susan, today is week 5 for me and I ditto everything you say! Still feel too tired, walking more, starting to work a little, cry (usually on days when I'm more tired I think), less sore muscles in chest but more "stinging" around incision. I'm still on amiodarone, a little bit of metoprolol, a statin, aspirin, coumadin.... Most of this because I had some a-fib and I sure hope I get off some of these drugs soon. My cardiac rehab starts on Sept. 16th. Thanks for posting, you've made me feel better - like more "normal" with this whole healing process. I have not attempted driving yet. Do you use a pillow or something under the seat belt?

Rose Madura I understand. I went into my surgery with the thought that in 3 months, I'll be better than ever. Well, nobody knew I'd be so symptomatic to the surgery that I'd end up being readmitted 4 times and spent a total of 24 days in the hospital. But having said that, I felt that I turned the corner mid-August. My surgery was May 31. I have walked briskly nearly every day and it has helped tremendously. You'll get there. But I agree, much harder than I anticipated.

Susan Richards Ann, Now I feel better because all these things must be normal if you have them too!! I had A-fib at the hospital too and am on all the same meds as you and really want to stop them.
I bought a seat belt cushion off Amazon that really helps. It keeps the strap from rubbing against the incision and it's also mentally comforting having it there.
I guess we'll just keep plugging along and eventually all this will be behind us and we'll be "normal" again.
Here's the link for the seat belt cushion I got: https://www.amazon.com/Breast-Chest-Buddy-Seatbelt-Reconstruction/dp/B00OGSPP7A/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=seat+belt+cushion+open+heart+surgery&qid=1567538514&s=gateway&sr=8-3
Rose, thanks for sharing your journey. You sure have been through it! So glad you have turned the corner and are making good progress. The waiting before having surgery is hard but I think the recovery period is pretty hard too. The only easy part is the surgery itself because we're out of it!

Mike Roskowinski Hey Susan. I also felt the same as you are feeling. I did not cry though mine was more of a frustration that I was still not able to do everything that I wanted. Sometimes the process seems like it is taking so long and we get impatient and want to do more. It does get better as the weeks go by. I am 17 weeks out of surgery and still have some things about my incision that bother me. But I have been told it could take some time to be fully healed. Otherwise I got back to playing volleyball after 9 weeks and golf at 12 weeks. Your energy and life should come back soon.

tim miller Hi Susan, I’m at 5 weeks and ditto to what you say. Yes I’ve been emotional and have cried a few times, especially when thinking about what all had happened and my children. My surgery wasn’t as easy as some, 10 hours and 7 days in the ICU with the first 2 a struggle. At 5 weeks I have had a few good days then the next day I’m exhausted. I sleep in segments, normally 2-3 hours at a time then up for a few then back to sleep. Cat naps during the day as well. I too am frustrated as I can’t do what I want to do but realize all in good time. We all have been through a lot and we all are different but we all share similar experiences. I think this website is very helpful in helping us deal with it as well and I thank everyone for their input and thoughts.

Rita Savelis Oh, gosh, that sounds so familiar. 6 weeks is so very very early. You've barely had time to process anything. Healing takes time. More time in many ways than many admit. The return to "normal" or to a new normal takes whatever time it'll take. No body or heart is the same. Be good to yourself as you heal and let all those emotions come through. Take care.

Ann Crone Hi Susan, I'm almost 4 weeks past surgery and I used mine about 3 times a day for the first 2 weeks, now I'm trying to remember to use it once a day. i can sometimes get to about 2000 but not every time. I had an X-ray last week and though there is a tiny bit of fluid at the bottom of my lungs, doctor says it will resolve on its own. I'm walking about twice a day 20 min. each time now (SLOW) but I try to do some deep breathing during that. Are you walking as well? When does your cardiac rehab start? I have orientation on August 27 for rehab (fingers crossed no problems before then). I'm finding this whole recovery process slow and a bit scary. How about you?

Ann, yes I’m walking. On good days 4 times up and back our lane which ends up being about 2/3 of a mile. I was getting around 2000 on the spirometer too, until I finally put it away because it gave me too much anxiety. (Crazy, I know!). When I had my 4 week follow up appointment with my surgeon, they said I didn’t need to do it anymore.
However. I just got it out a few days ago just to see, and I got it up to 3000. Yes, I do find this recovery process a little scary. I’m trying not to worry about every little thing. Sometimes though, I just feel really sad because I wish I could feel normal again, but I just try to remind myself that things would get a lot worse if I hadn’t had the surgery.

Well, today I'm exactly three weeks post op. I had a follow up appointment with my cardiologist yesterday and he cut my Amiodarone in half. They had prescribed that to me in the hospital for atrial flutter following my surgery. I was very happy to reduce that and can't wait until I don't have to take it at all. He also put me back on the Metoprolol I had been taking for years, which they had taken me off of at the hospital. My heart rate has been high since my surgery, over 100 resting, so the Metoprolol has helped bring that down about 20 points already.
Last night was the first night I really felt like I had turned a corner in my recovery. I found myself feeling "almost normal". The pain in my chest seemed less. I felt like I could take deeper breaths and I didn't have quite as big of a rock sitting on my chest. I realized I was thinking about normal things and not about my surgery or how I felt, or worrying about if this or that was normal. I felt really good when I went to bed last night because I thought, "tomorrow is going to be a really good day!"
And it has been a pretty good day so far, considering I haven't cried even once yet! I have developed a little tickly cough. Could be the air or maybe some leftover inflammation. The doctor said my lungs sounded fine and none of my medicines should be causing it. But if any of you have coughed yet, and I'm sure you have, it is not a pleasant experience! Even at the three week mark. I've taken to wearing my "heart hugger" around again so I can be ready when one crops up and stepped up the use of my incentive spirometer, which seems to help loosen things up.
I'm realizing now that it IS going to get better (I knew that but didn't FEEL it). This isn't going to be my new existence. The doctor gave me an order to go ahead and schedule cardiac rehab in a couple of weeks. I've never liked exercising but I am so looking foward to this!
So anyway, just wanted share my current status. Hope everyone else is doing well!

I thought that was a funny way to put it, but I understand what she meant. Have you had the opportunity to have had a real belly laugh yet? It caught me by surprise- I don’t think the diaphragm was ready for it yet, and it felt like it was going into spasms. That was way worse than coughing so far!

I had all my pre-admission testing and cardiac education yesterday. This took close to 4 hours. I left there feeling really confident and ready. Today, however, I'm back to feeling anxious and a little depressed about it again. I'll be ready to put this behind me so I can get off this emotional roller coaster.
I'm still going back and forth about whether I need a recliner to sleep in the first week or so. A lot of people have said they had to do that, but the RN yesterday said she didn't think it was necessary. I don't have one so I'd need to get one in place before next Wednesday.
Also, the ladies will understand this...what kind of bra should I wear when I leave the hospital and at home? I really don't think my normal ones will work. They're hard enough to get into on a good day.
Plus, the RN said not to drive for a MONTH! That knocked me for a loop, I really didn't expect it to be that long. I'm very independent and the thought of relying on someone for that long really makes me want to cry.
I'm also worried about catching a cold and having to postpone the surgery so I'm a little bit paranoid about being around people who are coughing and sniffling (which seems like everyone all of a sudden).
Sorry for the craziness! Just had to vent a bit!
One week to go... .

My wonderful parents purchased a lift recliner for me, and I can see how it will probably be a big help. Not everyone needs one, though, from what I've read on here. I have seen people mention renting one, which would probably be a good option to get one relatively quickly without spending too much money up front. I'm not sure where you'd go to rent one, though.

Nicole DuPont Susan, every thought you’ve mentioned concerned me too, and here’s what I’ve done to prepare for surgery next Friday:
- I bought a recliner specifically because of the comments here about people being grateful they’ve had one. I bought a power lift model with many bells and whistles which I’ll gift my dad for his birthday when I’m through recovery.
- I bought a post-surgery bra from AztecHeart. It was expensive but I want to be prepared. I also bought a few regular front closure bras with no underwire.
- I asked my surgeon about the driving, and he said it was due to the risk that arrhythmia can develop or a blood pressure drop which can make you dizzy or pass out. He said after about 4 weeks they would know you’re in the clear to drive.
- I’m worried about catching a cold too especially because so many wonderful friends and family are coming over to wish me well (lots of hugging). I’m trying my best to not let too much of it get near my face without being rude.
- I also put a shower wand in my shower. I thought it might be easier if I need help showering when I’m home.
I might be crazy and over-prepared, but I think it was my way of doing what I can when I have no idea what to expect!

Rose Madura Your feelings are very normal. My worst day was when the surgery was postponed one week due to an emergency. I think I cried all day. The waiting is the worse part. Regarding a bra, the hospital gave me a surgical bra which was nice. I usually used it if someone was comjng for a visit. Otherwise, I just didn't wear one for a while. I can do that. 😅 I bought a wedge to sleep on and while I did use it, I didn't like it. I would use lots of pillows in bed, sleep for a little while, then I did get up and go to the recliner. A huge deal for me was a travel pillow which helped sleeping in the hospital chair and recliner. One of the nurses at the hospital called me the pillow lady. There are some on this site who rented a recliner and were glad they did. If you have a favorite chair that you nap in, that would work as well. Regarfing driving, part of it too is your sternum. You may not be able to turn the wheel as you think you can.

Jeff Baker Hi Susan, I myself bought a lift recliner at rooms to go. They had 2 years 0% financing so I took advantage of that since I will be out of work for a while following my Mitral Valve Repair surgery August 6th. I heard the lift chair helps from a few people here.

Barbara Wood I bought a recliner but hardly used it, sleeping with a wedge pillow was more comfortable for me, but most areas have them for rent on a monthly or weekly basis & offer same day delivery, so there's that option too. I didn't wear a bra for the first few weeks, I wore a tank with a shelf bra. My skin around my collarbone was really sensitive to anything touching it, so tanks were good - the incision didn't hurt at all. Do be careful about catching a cold...they will postpone surgery if you do. I did & my surgery was postponed for 3 months! Take care Susan, all best wishes!

Lea Parker Hi Susan,
I used a wedge that I bought on Amazon to prop me up post surgery which helped me sleep better...but I must admit the day that I could roll onto my side to sleep was a glorious day! I also bought some “leisure” bras on Amazon that I took to the hospital and used to sleep in...you don’t want anything with underwire and a front closure is best ... Leading Lady Sleep cotton bra- I used them round the clock to provide support and prevent tugging on my incision. I know how overwhelming the ups and downs are! I would go from feeling confident to anxious to scared and then guilty for not being strong...and then the whole cycle started again. My story is alot like yours...bicuspid aortic valve which required open heart surgery to replace and I chose a bio prosthetic valve ... my surgery was 3 years ago...you have to be patient with recovery but each day you will get better. Please let me know if I can help in any way....blessings to you...Lea

Joy Vera Hi Susan. I didn't use a recliner. We had one at the house but I did not find it helped particularly. It felt better to me to elevate my torso with a pillow & add another pillow under my head. Bra-wise, the hospital offered me a surgical bra but I opted for one I'd worn after a previous surgery. Here's the link. http://www.clearpointmedical.com/compression-wear/surgery-recovery-bras-classic-comfort-bra.aspx

Rita Savelis A recliner isn't necessary. You can use pillows and wedges if need be in your bed, or lie/sleep on a sofa. It's easy to get panicked and think you need a lot of things that you don't really need.
I don't know how large your breasts are. No bra is really comfortable after OHS, but it is important to have some sort of support as your breasts can pull on your sternum. (No one talks enough about specific female problems after OHS). Hospitals often give you a post-surgical bra to wear. There are also post-op bras you can order. The ban on driving has to do with protecting your sternum as it heals.
I hear you completely on losing your independence. It's all hard. And then you deal with it. No one is ready and you can't prepare for everything, but you do get through it. Take care

Susan Richards Oh my, you guys are all awesome! Thanks SO much for all your thoughtful suggestions! It’s so nice having this community that understands. From the time I found out surgery was imminent, I wanted to talk to someone who had been through it or was going through it.
I have ordered a wedge pillow, and I have a friend who will loan me her power recliner if I think I need it. I have purchased three special bras. (I hope at least one of them fits).
And I’m taking my vitamin C! (Colds, stay away!!!)
Again, thanks so much for all of your help! Those of you with upcoming surgeries, Adam, Nicole, Jeff, I’ll be thinking of you and praying for you. We can do it!! ❤️

Mike Roskowinski Hello Susan. I bought a recliner and tried to sleep on it the first night back home and ended up in bed. I have been in bed since I been home and just use the recliner to sit in now. The not driving thing sucks a lot but it goes by fast. They just dont want you to have any sudden movements that can hurt your sternum. I too thought the same stuff but it was actually nice having others do stuff for you. I am very independent and don't rely on people to do stuff for me. My friends started a food train and I had people bringing us dinner every night so I did not have to cook. You will do just great and be out in no time.

Carlos Banuelos Hi Susan, hang in there. Those are all thoughts I had as well. I was so nervous about getting sick that I wore a mask on the airplane and only went out to dinner once after having arrived in Cleveland. I also was second guessing a lot of my decisions during the days leading up to my surgery. I think that’s totally natural. And thinking all of these things through will only make you more ready for it. Good luck, You will do great.

It's now 10 days until my surgery. I just got back last night from a wonderful beach vacation with my family. The long drive home from North Carolina to Ohio had my mind focusing on what was coming up. Tomorrow, I have a scheduled phone call with a nurse from the heart center to go over about 15 minutes worth of info. Then Tuesday, I'm getting an ultrasound on my carotid arteries.
Next Monday is a pre-surgical appointment with my surgeon, Tuesday night I check into the hospital at 8:00 pm. (gulp), and Wednesday morning at 7:15 is the main event. I now have a constant lump in my throat and knot in my stomach.
I'm sure it will be fine. My surgeon is one of the best around, I am otherwise healthy except for my bicuspid valve, so I'm trying to stay positive. I'm just being torn between wishing the surgery wasn't so soon, and wanting to put it behind me. Thanks for reading.

Tom McDonald Susan,
your story has many similarities to mine, with one difference I chose the ON-X Mechanical valve only because at 53 myself, Im hoping to have this surgery done only once. All the feelings you are experiencing are all normal. Mine were all over the spectrum leading up to surgery but as surgery moved closer i finally found peace mentally and spiritually. You are going to do great and you will have so much more enegy when you get your new valve. It's amazing! I'm doing things now that would have exhausted me prior to surgery. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Trust in your God and your medical team Peace!

Nicole DuPont You’re going to be fine! My surgery is a few days after yours. We’re in the homestretch! Then we can focus on recovering instead of worrying. All will go well.
