Pain management can be a bit rough at times. I know I want to get off my meds as soon as possible. But it's okay to admit that things are hard and take your pain meds. The important thing is being functional for the day and doing all your recovery to-dos.

Marie Myers It is great that you had your valve repaired! While it is wise to be off pain meds when you are able, there will be times you need them. I found that after a few days at home that Tylenol was enough. Sometimes , though, the narcotic was more useful at night to help get some sleep. Best wishes for your full recovery!

Leti Tenner I'm 4 weeks post op and I continue to have muscle tightness in my shoulders and upper back. I was discharged with Tylenol and a muscle relaxant (Robaxin), but I had the weirdest dreams taking the Robaxin. So, at week two, I started seeing a massage therapist once a week for a 30 minute session. I can't lay on a massage table, but the therapist brought in an upright massage chair for me (the type you straddle like a bike). I was really tense in my neck, shoulders, back and arms. It's provided gradual relief. Perhaps you could benefit from PT or massage therapy?
Keep the faith!

Grace Mason My back and shoulders were very tight for about 4 weeks and then in week 5 both felt better. I used icy hot, then alternating cold and hot packs and recently a tens unit with heat. Hospital gave me lidocaine patches but the icy hot helped me more initially.

Marie Myers My upper back and shoulders bothered me more than my chest ever did. I wish i had asked for a muscle relaxant, but really didn’t think of it at time. It dissipated with time, and I couldn’t wait to resume my massage sessions once i could lay on my chest again.
