Today my wife and I spent 6 hours at Kaiser going through all the hoops and procedures prior to My Monday mitral valve repair. Wow! The "minimally invasive" surgery that had been explained for the last 2 months suddenly turned into a major event, with pages and pages of pre and post op instructions and limitations, new procedures, and on and on and on. Lots of conflicting descriptions from the Physician Assistant, Anesthesiologist, and nurse and even the hospital administration. I thought I knew what to expect, and now there is a huge range of expectations (expected 3 to 5 days in hospital, now I should expect 3 days to NINE days in hospital for example) and procedures to expect. The good news: I will enter the OR fully awake, will be given a light sedative, and wake up in ICU. Constant use of the spirometer and walking are my ticket out. It's now time to Rock and Roll friends!

Rita Savelis They do throw out a lot of information... They have to cover themselves, alas. Some things will go as expected, but there may be a few surprises. So everything is spelled out, even info you don't need...It's hard to have a handle on it all. It sounds like they were being honest when they gave you a range of time you might spend in hospital. There is an average stay, but if they haven't given you a range of time, you may then be surprised if something varies slightly. Wishing you a smooth ride. Entering the OR awake and waking up in ICU is the way it goes. Take care.

Susan Lynn Tom - I had minimally invasive mitral valve repair. I only remember being awake for about 5 seconds in the OR. Next thing I knew, it was over. I was walking the halls and getting up on my own on day 2. Surgery was Friday and I was out midday on Monday. You're going to do just fine. I told my friends and family if they improve the process any further, they'll be performing it through a drive- through window! You'll be great!

Tom DeHollander Thank you! Luckily, I almost experienced the "drive through" procedure. It's Thursday and I'm already home! I joined an elite group: "3 Day Warriors". I credit my success with proper physical and mental preparation. Adam's book, lots of internet research, and a very strong walking routine were keys. Surgery was on Monday, I did 4 laps around the nurses station Tuesday morning, and 5 in the afternoon. The PT couldn't believe my speed and strength. I overdid it a bit and paid a pain price that night. Took "strolls" all day yesterday. I've been off meds for 2 days now and virtually pain free...even sleeping on my surgery side last night. I put Dr. Hon Lee of Kaiser Santa Clara on a pedestal as the absolute best with his technical abilities and bedside manner. He definitely has "Angel Hands" as I had heard!
