Hi Adam! You were wise to choose the mechanical valve at your young age.
I had a tissue valve at age 59, much older than you, but 10 years later it needed replacing again. I chose mechanical ( I was not a candidate for TAVR). Otherwise, I may have needed a third open heart surgery.
My advice is to not go over the required INR. I had bleeding issues so I keep it at the lowest possible number (hard to do but it gets easier)
The vitamin K foods are good for you… just be pretty consistent about how you eat them. I try to eat greens several times a week.
I would check with your Dr about the bleeding. God bless you and may you continue to heal.

Adam, I had my mitral replaced with a St. Jude mechanical valve 37 years ago, so I have been on coumadin that long. I was 46 at the time and was advised to go with a mechanical valve because I was too young to go the route of a tissue valve for the same reason you were advised against a tissue valve. I will be 83 in August. Seven years ago my aortic valve was replaced with a mechanical valve, an ATS AP one.
I had rheumatic heart disease as a teenager, and my valves were compromised at that time. I skied until 75, and now my husband and I ride our pedal assist bikes, and I fly fish with him. We are hampered by age and move slowly, so getting down to streams on some hillsides can be slow and a stubborn process. (When he retired, he became a fly fishing guide for many years. He liked his office !!) Judy

Hi Adam , It is probably nothing to do with your warfarin , there are lots of other reasons that can cause those symptoms . You will need to get yourself checked out though . I would wait until Monday but you do what puts your mind at ease . Have you been eating and drinking normally and regularly ? Have you had an infection or constipation ? Lots of beetroot ? Try not to worry , I know it ‘s easier said than done .
Thanks Adam for the video link. Jeff seems like a great guy, and pretty similar to both of our cases.
Keep us posted and I'll be in touch on the site as well as things progress.

Adam Gloo A month out, and I feel the same way. More than happy to share what I've gone through, and try to help in any way I can. My experience has plenty of similarities to your story, Jeff, but also plenty of things that make both of our stories unique to us. I would assume you'll find the same to be true Mike.

Mike Sparr Jeff I've been catching up on videos. From your last one I hope the rapid heart rates with easy exercize tone back down. That kind of funk is extremely frustrating for someone who hasn't had surgery, so I can't imagine in recovery. I'll have to stay tuned for the next video to find out how it went! Great production leaving us on a cliffhanger, lol.

Jeff Williams Ha, I try not to make them too frequently so because so much of it would be the same thing over and over again. I go back to the cardiologist and primary doc next week and I'll post an update.
I stopped the benazepril and that helped the dizziness and hose feelings. Working through more episodes with blood sugar dropping (hence the primary doc) but I think I've figured it out. Battling a nasty cold right now so it's been slow going, but I have been able to run recently.

Deena Z Thinking of you, Adam. Almost over and in recovery. You will be really tired, but up and out of bed as soon as you wake up the day after surgery. Because you are so young, you will heal much faster than most of us. Where did you finally decide to go for your surgery?

Hi Adam , Welcome Lovely photos !
I have been taking warfarin for over three years now . I eat plenty of green leafy veg and lots of salad . My Inr is now checked three monthly .
I had emergency open heart surgery ( during covid times ) and have a mechanical mitral valve ( St.Jude’s ) . Life goes on and these three years are three years that I nearly never had . I got out of hospital in time to celebrate my son’s 18th birthday . He ‘s 21 now and very happy to still have his mum around . Seeing me very poorly before open heart surgery was stressful for him and his brother and they found my recovery amazing . It felt like a miracle really . Surgery is amazing .
