Hi Brian ,
Needing surgery as an emergency is a big life change but it a huge relief to get the life saving surgery .
I had emergency open heart surgery , over three years ago , my surgeon chose a mechanical mitral valve for me because of my age . I am very happy to be alive and every day is precious . You are going to be okay and you are doing really well .

Deena Z Well said, Ruth. We are thinking of you, Brian. You are almost there and on-your-way to recovery. You will be very, very exhausted upon waking, but know every day you will get much, much stronger. So , be patient. Godspeed.

Wishing you all the best with your surgery. Mine surgery is tomorrow. I had a trifecta porcine valve implanted in 2014 and it's leaking, as are many other trifecta valves. In 2014 they were the best valves our there. Just goes to show you nothing is for certain. My opinion is we need to decide on tissue valve or mechanical (needs blood thinner) and after that leave the specific valve selection up to the surgeon.
