Thinking of you, Dan. You are almost there and will soon be in recovery. Tomorrow will go by fast. Stay positive and don't hesitate to ask for anything you need when in the hospital. Look forward to hearing about your laps around the ICU!

Timothy Williams Stay positive! Let the pro's handle the surgery. Then you can help with he recovery. Start slow of course. First its sitting up, then standing, then walking, slowly getting more active. Really seemed to help me progress through recovery.
Praying for your surgery to go well tomorrow. God bless you Dan

Dan , You ‘re not the only one to be surprised that it ‘s cardiac related . I think a lot of us had/ have put the early symptoms down to something else and tried " mind over matter " to get on with life until we just couldn ‘t any more . Getting older / the perimenopause / busy lives / looking after other people and not having time for ourselves / working under pressure / global pandemic all reasons many of us will have not have thought the symptoms were due to a cardiac problem . At least you will be getting your surgery soon and eventually your lovely dog will be back wanting to sit on your lap again

Susan Lynn Dan - Many of us were surprised by our diagnoses. Even after finding out I needed surgery, denial was my frequent friend. You're in great shape - you'll rebound quickly after your procedure. You might want to plan one of your trips for the summer. You're going to feel like a rock star when this is behind you. We'll be cheering for you next week! Wishing you all the best!

Dan Sauerbrei Thanks Susan, denial as a frequent friend is a good way to state that. My wife had been patiently awaiting me to get through that phase which took a while. My increasing symptoms and decreasing activity capacity has made me realized denial is a non-sustainable outlook. Really appreciate the support. Glad I found this site!

Dan, hello from a fellow Iowan. Your surgery is coming up and you will do fine. I’m anxious to follow your story about your “repair” of your aortic valve instead of replacement of your valve. Who is your surgeon at University of Iowa? I’ve been a member of this group since 2011 if you want to read “my story”.

Dan Sauerbrei Hi Carol. My surgeon is Dr. Singhal at UIHC. I've gone back and forth between repair vs replace, ultimately decided I like the idea of keeping as much of my own bodies tissue intact as possible. I'm told I am a good candidate for a repair, and the procedure is similar to a replacement biomechanical valve.
