Debra - Happy New Year to you- I had Aortic Valve replacement on December 12th and was home in 8 days - it took longer for me since I had fluid accumulating in my lungs - all is well now and I am looking forward to full recovery soon. You will be fine - I also had one of the best heart surgeons in New Jersey - Dr Chris Magovern. He told me that my surgery was a result of the heart murmur I have had my whole life at least since I can remember at age 12 when I know they told my parents. None of my subsequent Drs ever mentioned having a doppler heart exam so this came on to be quickly - I had no idea it was my heart - thought it was weight gain and being out of shape - you will be in good hands and will recover well just like my surgeon has told me - hope all the best to you on the 3rd and will be thinking of you !

Praying that the hand of God heals and brings you thru this very serious surgery. I am nearly 16 years post op with an Aortic Valve Replacement. I chose the On-X Mechanical Valve and have done extremely well. Jesus be with you.

Hi Deborah,
Im 63 and also had Hodgkin’s lymphoma stage 3A in 1985. Treated with lots of radiation. Mantle, back, abdomen. I had my thyroid removed in 2008, Aortic valve replacement in 2013- cow valve - ablation - cardioverted at 2 different hospitals 2 years later and then a pacemaker. Had been doing pretty well. Now I seem to have Afib and we are working on getting me back in rhythm.
Hodgkins treaty was at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. All cardiac procedures have been at Northwestern in Chicago.
Good luck on your journey.

Rita Savelis Hi Deborah. I'm also 63 and had Hodgkin's in 1977 with MOPP chemotherapy and mantle chest radiation. I had heart valve surgery in 2015 with my aortic and mitral valves replaced with mechanical valves and my tricuspid reinforced. I had a pacemaker implanted a few weeks later. I'm sorry that you have to go through this, but it seems like most former Hodgkin's patients do. Having a surgeon who is familiar with radiated hearts is key, but there seem to be many different ways one can proceed. Every patient is different and every radiated heart is different. Take care.

Trygve Harris Hi Deborah. I'm 60. I had radiation for metastatic melanoma (right axilla) in 1986. Had my valve replaced in 2023 but it immediately re-calcified and now I am re-doing at Mt Sinai in Oct. Also had an endomitreal cancer diagnosis with the mitral replacement. Chemo and radiation. Have some intermittent but scary afib at the moment, hoping to have MAZE. We just trundle along with this stuff, don't we?

Hi there Debra
Although I did not require work on my Mitral Valve, I had my Aortic Valve replaced via TAVR in January of this year. I was surprised that I was able to come home the day after the procedure. It took a while for me to fully recover primarily due to another health problem, not cardiac related. Try to not worry. I’m sure your doctors at BY are top drawer and that soon you will be feeling better than you have in quite a while. All the best!
