Gary,
My cardiologist is an interventional cardiologist so he performed the procedure at Missouri Baptist in the cath lab. He did a femoral entry in the groin area. I was awake the whole time and there was no issue no pain. They were clear if there was pain that they wanted to know about it. He put/used a dissolvable plug in the puncture so there were no sutures.
You need to take it easy after the catheterization and drink plenty of water to get the dye out of your system.
I know there must be very cable interventional cardiologists at CC.

You will be on your way to recovery before you know it. Donor sweat the heart catherization. It was pretty easy. I was medicated some and only felt tugging. Had some bruising in groin area. That went away in a few weeks. So try to relax and not worry. One of my heart sisters on the site, mentioned worrying is not good for the heart. She suggested I use my energy on enjoying each day, and focusing on the positive.
This wonderful heart community is here for you.
Good luck with everything!

Gary, sorry to hear you haver another bump in your journey. I would talk to your surgeon and see what his recommendation is. I would think it would be best to take care of the procedure for the carcinoma first. That's just what my opinion is. Of course I am not a physician.
The other thing that is always recommended is to have any dental
procedures done before valve surgery. My surgeon made me start premedication again before dental treatments or any surgeries.

Found a nice video on the web site that talked about the procedure below.
I did not mention that they do collapse the right lung to get better access to the atrium. I had no issue with lung reinflation and had full capacity the day after surgery. The major incision was made in the right armpit.

Robotic surgery was not decided for me until after I was present in the OR. They did perform CT/angiogram and ultrasound testing of both femoral arteries during the testing phase before surgery but Dr. Gillinov could not tell me which surgery was going to be performed when I met with him on the Friday before my surgery on Monday. I am not sure if this is a standard practice, but that was my personal experience. There was a discussion about performing the safest procedure.
I understand that the size/physiology of some folks femoral arteries can eliminate them as candidates for this type of surgery because the cannulation is done through the femoral artery as opposed to the chest using a more standard sternotomy approach.
Let me know if you want any references on this information as I did look into this to better understand the risks of robotic surgery compared to a sternotomy.
Both femoral artery areas were prepped preop and my chest was also marked in case they were going to perform a minimally invasive sternotomy.

Hello Gary,
Welcome to our heart family. As far as the heart catherization, try to relax. I had mine done, it was not painful. All I felt was a little tugging in the groin area. I was partially awake, but only remember a little. They made me lay flat for three hours afterwards. Was released to home quickly. There was a bit of bruising in the groin. That went away within a few weeks.
Remember to communicate with our brothers and sisters on the site. We are here for you. I had a mitral valve replacement on July 29th. The surgeon was not able to do the repair, due to lots of calcification. Apparently, I had rheumatic fever as a child and it cause the mitral stenosis. I am doing fantastic now. If you have any other questions for me, feel free to email me.
You will come through the heart catherization and surgery wonderfully.
Your heart sister,

Hello Gary. Welcome to this site. I just had a catherazation at the beginning of Aug. When I had my Catheraztion . I don't remeber any pain. I was awake during the cath. They gave you meds to make you tired. I had mine done in the groin. But they had Promblems with the vain so they did it in the neck.
I was in recovery for 4 hours before they sent me home.
I am going for my surgery on Sept 39.
I hope this helped.

Jason Leber Hi Gary, I agree with Olga regarding the catheter.....no pain. In fact I found it really interesting as I was also fully awake and didn't take any sedation because I wanted to see what was happening on the screens (I could watch as they fed the catheter in). It only felt "strange" as you can feel it travel upwards and into your heart. I took the approach of a very cool science project that I got to be part of. Its' pretty amazing. My only advice would be to take it really easy for few days following. Mine was done through my groin and the plug that was used to seal the artery blew out the following morning and I bled internally! Thankfully my wife is a nurse and she stopped the bleeding quickly. It's been two full weeks now and I am still bruised and only slightly sore. Most of that was all caused by the bleeding so if that hadn't happened I would've healed quicker.
Good luck!

Eleanor R Hi, Gary. As part of the medical work up leading to replacement of my aortic valve, I too had a heart catherization. I was afraid. I had never had major surgery, nothing ever to do with my heart. I imagined all kinds of dire outcomes. I was only mildly sedated and for a very brief time. I could have watched the procedure on the wide screen TV, as the "interventional cardiologist" did as he conducted the procedure. No thanks, not for me. I closed my eyes and just did whatever he instructed me to do (relax, cough (why?) It was over quickly, and a plug was inserted. I had to lie flat for a little over two hours. For me, that was the hardest part, trying to not move off my back. I'm not a back sleeper and being flat was hard. I had my adult daughter with me though and she helped me pass the time. During this time the cardiologist came by to tell me his findings, which were good, no blockage of arteries, hence no need for bypass surgery along with the valve replacement. Instructions to rest, don't climb stairs or lift weights for a day or two, and to monitor the opening. Frankly, I actually had to look for it, since there was no brusing at the site. A good outcome, and not as nerve racking as I had imagined. Turns out that our imagination is often more powerful than reality. I hope this turns out to be the case for you as well, pretty sure it will be. Best wishes to you. Eleanor
