Welcome Janine to our awesome heart community. I totally understand how you are feeling. I had a murmur diagnosed at 40, and knew surgery was needed in the future. To shorten the details, I had a mitral valve replacement on july 29,2014. A replacement was not possible with the calcification on valve and other medical issues. I chose a tissue valve, (pig). Today I am functioning very well. No more flickering of the valve, (regurgitation) pulmonary functions are great. Breathing is fantastic. I am so thankful that my cardiologist recommended a heart cath to see when surgery was necessary. To my surprise the time had come. My surgical team was amazing. In the 2nd day I did have afib. It scared me, but I had not done my research in this area. The team was able to get me back in normal sinus rhythm. They assured myself and family that I would be fine. My stay in hospital was an extra four days. Good news is I have not had any issues after stay in hospital. So please do not worry about afib
It happens when the heart is angry!! You will do fine. Enjoy your time with the children and be sure to contact me if I can help you through this journey. Hugs from Mia in Mi.

Janine Peterson Hi Mary: I am 12 days from surgery. He thinks it can be repaired but in the event it needs to be replaced, he wants to know which kind of valve I want. My gut tells me I want a pig valve but I fear it wont last as long as a mechanical. But, I really do not want to be on Coumadin the rest of my life. How did you chose?
