I have exactly the same valve and full root replacement even though I did not have a root problem. My surgeon is very confident this is a pretty long term solution. Some people have had them for as long as 35 years with a porcine valve and still going strong. I am 7 1/2 weeks,post op and did have second opening of the chest 6 days later to remove the PICC line which got wedged under a surgical clip. My recovery has been very similar to yours, I went back to work 6 1/2 weeks after the original surgery and this is my second week and I am headed out on a trip to Chicago tomorrow. Not feeling 100 percent yet but feeling pretty good. Stamina is very good and still improving. Thanks for the post and keep posting your great results.

Saw your note to Tom. Just wanted to share, like you, I too am on Metroprolol (50mg/day, 1 tab in AM). Probably for life. I too had AVR and repair of lower ascending aorta (just above my root). I consider my doc very conservative, but trust him 100%. It was nice for me to read I am not the only one on some meds for the long term. Take care, -Mitch Friedman

J H Mattingly You will get there. I pushed myself a lot during my recovery because I wanted to get back to doing everything I wanted to do and sometimes probably should have been a little more patient. But it's just my nature. Give it a little more time...you are still healing.

J H Mattingly Tom...due to my aneurysm repair, my cardiologist wants me to stay on my beta-blocker (Metroprolol 25mg), maybe forever. He believes it provides extra protection for my aorta lining in other areas. If I just had a AVR only, then I likely would be off the beta-blocker.
My heart rate was high after surgery for a while and I actually was taking 75mg/day (3 pills/day) for a while. Was backed down to 50mg/day and now only 25mg/day (1 pill), which I have been on for months now. So, it took probably about 3 months or so before it kinda got back to a normal rate....just part of the healing process I was told.

J H Mattingly Ain't it great?! I am so happy for you and love reading your updates. Keep pushing yourself and work the weights back in slowly. I started my own 90 day plan at the first of the year...weightlifting and cardio. My chest soreness slowly went away and I could do anything I wanted by the end.
You are a setting such a great example for your boys (I have 3 of my own).
