Hi Lynne. I was doing some research on lung hernia repair & came across your post. I am slated for a right lung hernia repair on Oct. 18 due to minimally invasive mitral valve replacement in 2015 (had another OHS via sternotomy 6 months ago). I have one of the best surgeons in the world (https://www.ohsu.edu/providers/jai-raman/2F269725EDFA4333BD6CB5D878E08CC3), but, your post has given me great pause. He said he was going to use a synthetic-bone-type substance to fix hernia and not a mesh.
As you know, the pain is unreal w. these things & constantly debilitating. Was wondering if your spasms ever backed off? I asked my surgeon about this today & he said he was not aware of spasms connected to this procedure post-op....but, you're the 2nd person I've seen state that you were having them. Thank you much for your time!

Lynne Jeffreys Hi Roger, Perfect timing if I can say it. What did you do to cause your hernia? I have still been having spasms and cramping of the muscles, but less than before. I had sent a note off to my surgeon and said he was referring me to a chronic pain specialist. That's not what I asked him about but I guess there really isn't more that he or surgery could do and move you off to someone else. I have unfortunately developed some neck muscles spasms at the base of the skull (nothing to do with the pec muscles) , some hearing problems and vertigo. Since I have not been able to be as active as I was the muscle cramping and spasms of the pectorals have somewhat eased off. Now that I'm seeing a chiropractor for the neck he was made aware of the muscles and how they work with the upper body muscles, pectorals included. He has done some light releases along the top of the upper pectoral muscle. It hasn't changed the pain I get from a cramp when they happen but he has removed some of the knots in the muscle which could help with the cramping. I know as soon as I ask more of the muscles they will cramp and become sorer. Whether this time off will be of any help once I get the other issues under control is something to think about. Because it is such a thin muscle compared to most in other muscles it is just more painful when used. I'm going to pursue more once I'm feeling better from the neck. I do wonder really how much they are connected if at all. Sometimes I get a pinch and I'm not sure if it is the mesh on the bottom of the ribs or what. Doesn't last long, like a pin prick. I know that the surgery would cause some adhesion of the layers from the mesh out and I think at times there is some pulling.
I'm not familiar with his method of repair, but I think the area of study is not well known but doctors are becoming more aware that this is a risk that needs to be made aware of and told to patients. I had told my doctor that I'm an active person and gardener so stitch me up well. Guess he didn't stitch it up well. So now that this is becoming a more known problem you will start to see other ways of fixing a potential blow out of the lung.
I'm curious to know how you do if you get a chance at some point because I will need to have the valve replaced hopefully 20 years from now and they may need to use the same area. If this way works then it's an option in the future.
Best of luck to you Roger and call anytime with questions. I'll do my best to help.

Roger Perkins Thank you much Lynne. After my initial minimally invasive surgery my surgeon told me it was okay to stretch out the incision site to prevent favoring that area long term - as well as preventing adhesions to form. He also told me I was okay to work out again when it felt right. Being an avid weight-lifter, I was bench pressing 5 weeks later...& I suspect that's when the hernia formed (started having pain soon thereafter). Would get better in time - then hurt again when I would do certain exercises. Spent hundreds & hundreds of $$ on physical therapists - which would help some - but, the pain still resided because it was a mechanical issue that needs to be fixed.
In the immediate ICU days after my 2nd OHS in April of this year the lung hernia got way worse. Now, it is almost softball size when I cough or engage my inner cavity (I hold it in as much as possible). Again, as you know, pain is a constant companion. I cannot continue to "wait & see if it heals on its own." However, as stated above, your neck & spasm issues do give me great pause in this decision (I cannot imagine how painful this must be for you). So sorry to hear this about your recovery. Greatly appreciate you taking the time to respond. Take care & pls. keep me updated!

Lynne Jeffreys Hi Michele, Things are going well. The size of the aorta appears to be 1.25cm squared from 0.56cm squared. So it was much smaller. The valve is called a Medium size Perceval S pericardial sutureless valve. I don't know what the opening size is or isn't. I never asked and they never said what the opening normally is. I guess it is what it is. Its working that's what counts!
My Mom's heart surgery was normal old age stenosis and bypass but there was more calcium buildup than anticipated from the testing and a piece caused a heart attack 12 hours later. She was 76. I know I said this to my surgeon as there was a lot with my bicuspid valve. We still to this day have unanswered questions but there's nothing we could do. Lynne
Merry Christmas too!

Tammy Pilcher Lynne, I had pain in my mid back and shoulder blades. The nurses told me that would probably happen and that it is normal. They said it's from being in the position you're in during surgery. I was able to get relief with extra strength Tylenol, but some people use a heating pad too. I hope you feel better soon. It takes time, but you'll get there. Let me know if I can help. - Tammy

Hi, Lynne!
We've all been scared about our diagnoses. I was diagnosed with BAV, aortic stenosis and calcification last December, and I'm 37 years old.
On March 13th I had OHS to replace my aortic valve, got a mechanical valve, and 3 months later here I am, feeling better than ever.
In my case the choice was simple, but extremely scary which made it even simpler: undergo OHS to replace the valve or do nothing and wait for my heart to get worse up to the point where I would need a heart transplant and if I still wouldn't do it... so basically I chose to live even if the decision itself was very, very scary.
And then I took a leap of faith, thinking I was jumping into a huge, dark abyss when in reality I wasn't. I was so afraid I thought I had a bottomless pit right in front of me. But I said to myself: If it needs to get done, it will be done. And I did it. And I'm still here, with a far better future than the one I had 6 months ago, and no words can describe it, it can only be expressed by an enormous joy and happiness of being, and feeling, alive.
Talk to whom ever you have to talk to, but please make the decision to do it. You have so much to gain if you decide to do it without fear, and the key to that is to accept the fact that you're OK with the outcome of you undergoing surgery, no matter what the outcome is. You can only control what you do, what you think and what you feel, the rest is... call it God, call it luck, call it destiny, fate, call it whatever you like but you have the biggest saying about how you want to deal with all this.

Even if it's a bit scary on and off, you can sign on and off as often as you like to get the info you want! And somehow, hopefully with the knowledge gained and the posts by all those who have survived this, we calmly get to the right place were we Just Do It! No regrets here, even if I'm sure it's going to take me much longer than you to feel as great as you! I have weight issues about 20 years on you! But my new tissue aortic valve and Dacron aortic root will get me there!

Lynne, don't despair. I had an aortic valve replacement Dec.09, 2010 with a bypass. The next day after my surgery my doctor informed me without it, I would never had made my birth date the next following year, March 12. My heart surgeon and my cardiologist both came into my room to inform me of their finding. It is now 4 and a half years later. Saturday night, or rather Sunday morning at about 12:15 doing my walk, I left the heart patient floor in the hospital in search of a diet pepsi. I went all over the hospital looking for a pepsi machine. Didn't find one, and so went back to the heart floor. Big mistake. The two night nurses were waiting for me when I stepped out of the elevator. That was when I found out the wrist band had a monitor device in it that alarmed when I left the floor. Needless to say, I lost my walking clothes and small bag from my room, back to the backless gown! The next day, my cardiologist, give me the good news. I could leave on Monday morning since I was in good enough shape to be walking around the hospital, and talking to the hospital guards. Bad news on Monday morning my wife and best friend was given firm instructions regarding no soda for at least a month. Long story, short. Main thing since it is tomorrow go in with a good outlook. They are the experts, and after watching countless of video's and reading others success stories, their(the surgeons) hands are guided by a source greater than all of us. I am looking forward to another 20 years, I am 63, at least; just got to learn to follow the doctors' instructions. You will do find, and good luck. Have faith come tomorrow.

I was diagnosed with BAV and Aortic Root dilation of 5cm a year ago. I had no symptoms and I was involved in sport all my life. A routine medical offered at work led to the shocking discovery. The surgeon’s advice was to go for the surgery while I was fit and healthy.
I had surgery last September and had a mechanical aortic valve and root replacement. Dacron was used for the repair or my aorta. The surgery was performed by Dr Michael Tolan at the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin.
All went well and I’m back running again. Don’t worry too much, I just went for it!

Hi, Lynne. Just sending you an update on my groin area and right leg. It is getting better and better each day, thank goodness. I have been applying a moisture heat pad on it daily for an hour. Then afterwards, I massage the area. It is still a bit numb in 2 small areas, but the good news is that there is no more pain, and it doesn't impede on exercise or walking. I'm really relieved!

Second, he was rude although to him that's normal for him. Yes, he's lacking in the compassion department. So he's the best surgeon so far for you....If that's the case keep him in the picture, but keep looking, if something does not feel right to you. I switched the month of my surgery. Please contact Dr. Stewart (deb is his assistant and will answer the phone). Tell her how u heard of him from this sight, and want to know if u can mail your tests for him to review, or just discuss over the phone. I think just getting a clear picture on what is best for you ( by two surgeons) is a huge stress reliever. As far as the waiting time, what a pain.
