Amy Berger Hi Annette - my Avr is scheduled for January 24th. I’ve gone through a whole range of emotions but am pretty much at peace now about the surgery. What I keep telling myself is all I have to do is show up :) I’ve also made a grateful list of positives and spending more time in prayer. Also the people in this group are phenomenal!

I read your story, and it was so much like the beginning of my own. When I read it, I was like….I’ve found a support sister!! I’ve never met anyone who has been on basically the same path. I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease/Lymphoma when I was 24. I’ve experienced many of the same side effects. I too had to have an aortic valve implanted. I just wanted to give you hope and some encouragement along your way. I do have a question. You mentioned that they knew about your radiation damage. Is the surgeon familiar with other patients and has he/she performed surgery on others that have had radiation damage such as in your case? That’s one question I wish that I would have asked before my 1st surgery. I was denied a TAVR, but later, that was my only option. I’m so thankful for a second chance! I’ll carry you in my heart and pray that everything goes well with your upcoming surgery.~❤️

Scott Nicewarner I'll let my wife know your story, and you are right it is eerily similar. She was on the way to TAVR being done until the heart MRI showed some calcification in her left ventricle. The cardiac team felt it was warranted to do OHS and get that out of there now so that it won't cause an issue in 5-10 years. They feel the valve being put in (bovine) is going to be good for 15-20 years, and will be able to be "replaced" by TAVR at that time. We figured it was worth the OHS to get it all taken care of. They have done multiple scans of her heart and the surgeon feels that the scar tissue is not going to be a problem. She is obviously scared which is understandable and we were warned 30 years ago that this could be a problem down the road. Still, it is somewhat surreal to be going through this. However, MedStar Washington Hospital Center is one of the best and we are confident. We'll stay in touch!
