Robert Miller It seems a bit long to have this for some 1.5 years after surgery. But I would suggest some acupuncture. I didn't quite believe in it but I gave it a try and I think it helped. The place I went to also gave some "deep tissue" massage. I think the massage actually helped more than the acupuncture. I am still skeptical about all this but give it a try.

Yumiko Ishida I was avoiding K but noticed after my surgery that the hospital-prescribed multivitamin included a high dose of K. It took more warfarin to bring INR in therapeutic range. Didn’t seem to make sense to take a lot of K and then negate its effect by increasing warfarin. So it got me thinking, and I started taking other supplements that raise my INR like fish oil, vitamins E and A, turmeric, etc. Was able to reduce warfarin to my previous, pre surgery dose. Was monitoring INR weekly and adjusted the dose gradually. Have not been doing it for long, and don’t know if it will make a difference, but I figured it’s worth a try.

Laura Bickford Hi Annette- I have had a barium swallow. I am also a nurse. It is a piece of cake compared to heart surgery. It is a series of x-rays taken after and while you are swallowing barium liquid (shows up on x-ray). It shows how the liquid progresses as you swallow. You may also be placed on a table that tilts. This will show if you have gastric reflux or something called Barrett's esophagus, where food can get caught as you swallow. It's not bad at all. Good luck.

Recovering from open heart surgery is tough enough, you don't want to make it worse getting sick. Just my opinion.

Bryan higgins Eliquis is an easier blood thinner to live with than warfarin.
Brady Busch Hello Annette,Is your new mitral valve,a mechanical one? I had a tissue aortic valve replacement and mitral repair done in 11/2021.I was taking Warfarin, then was switched to Eliquis, about a six months ago, because of AF,which happens seldom,if at all now, according to me. From reading,Eliquis isn't recommended for people with mechanical valves. Did they close off the left atrial appendage(Watchman)? They didn't with mine.Kind of disappointed, but overall happy to get the other things resolved.

Patsy Stewart You might ask your cardiologist if there is another blood thinner option for you. I didn't have a mechanical valve, but I was told that I would be on blood thinners for life. I had afib, and occasionally still do. He put me on Eliquis. I had to quit taking that because I kept bleeding internally. He replaced it with Plavix, but it isn't a blood thinner. I'm allergic to aspirin. My cardiologist is trying to come up with a plan. Hopefully, you can get off of the Warfarin and have it replaced with something else.

I thought I could do my rehab on my own since I had a stationary bike at home, could walk on own and swim. My strength was not improving and ended up w/ pericarditis diagnosis 2 months from surgery. Got on the wait list for cardiac rehab and started a couple weeks later. I would certainly recommend it. They put you on a monitor so someone is watching your HR and EKG tracings in a controlled exercise environment. My sister in PA is completing her cardiac rehab program due to a stent/blockage issue. Her program is more involved than mine was. They include diet/sodium education and have more equipment available. I did not have that, but still feel it was beneficial. I'm not positive, but believe most programs are 32-34 sessions. I went 2x/wk due to work, but most folks went 3x/wk. Hanag in there. Your body has been through a lot.

DeLois Tweedy Annette, glad you are through surgery and well into recovery. I had aortic valve replacement by TAVR in June 2020. My cardiologist ordered Cardiac Rehab after. I was very deconditioned secondary to a liver injury, heart attack and ongoing problems with A fib/A flutter just prior to my valve replacement. I waited for a few months before going to Cardiac Rehab (good or bad for me to wait, I don't know).
Rehab was great, beginning with just the socialization I had with fellow heart warriors. I liked that we wore heart monitors and nurses were present to monitor us every step of the way. My ins paid for 36 visits (which was what my doctor referral stated). I went 3x/week. We also were educated on various heart/lung related topics, and diet was addressed as well. Personally, it helped me tremendously. I had the option of continuing at same Cardiopulmonary Clinic 2x/week, more on our own, though BP, HR and O2 sat was taken before and after exercise by the nurses. There was a small monthly fee for this.
I would say it would help you, in a lot of ways. If still unsure, ask your doctor to give you guidance on when to start Rehab program.
