Hello, Update for me...16 weeks past surgery. I had an echocardiogram on June,17. No more stenosis ...so glad Aortic valve, and root clan. My mitral valve has one calcified leaflet. This is since my childhood and scarlet Fever, or I could have been born with it. I was a preemie. I have mild stenosis in that valve but the cardiologist doesn't need to see me until December No mobility issues or regurgitation or any other problem now.
Really happy. BP has been good. Oxygen has been good. Never had pain after surgery. Stamina is less than before but rehab helps loads. I am truly blessed.
May you all have successful surgery and recover quickly.

Just an update on my recovery. Now 18 weeks post surgery. The other day I realized that I felt better than I have in years. I have an echocardiogram on the 17th and will find out if I am doing as well as I feel I am. I thank God and my amazing surgeon for getting me through a bit of a rough surgery (on and off heart lung machine twice and problems with first valve placed.)
I read of all your ups and downs but I am sorry I don't post all the time. My heart and prayers are with you all ...pre and post surgery. Be safe and well friends. Thank you Adam for starting this site. It is truly a life saver.👍🙋😊

For those of you who are about to go into surgery. These are things I have experienced.
I have just turned 84 and my surgery was Feb.19 for aortic stenosis. I was totally asymptomatic before the surgery but when I found out about the severe stenosis my decision was made for me. I want to continue living. Mom made it to 103.
Recovery has been great, now at 16 weeks but I have experienced...
1. Fatigue...don't expect to feel like you did before surgery. I wanted go sleep alot. Let your body heal. 2. Couldn't sleep on my back. Have a power recliner and sleep in it sometimes even now. 3. You will most likely be foggy right after surgery. I took a mocha test about 10 days after surgery and the first question was ...Who was the first President. I said Lincoln...oops. My thinking was very slow and it was very annoying. All has returned to normal. Do lots of word puzzles... It helps.. I passed mocha...Lincoln was my only bad answer and I corrected it later. 4. You may develop a cough. I still have a slight one after 4 months. I use flonaise for allergies. It helps. 5. Stamina is much less but I have been assured that it improves over time. I am going to cardiac rehab and I am getting stronger each session. Consider this for you. 6. When you get out of the hospital go to acute rehab. They only take recovering g patients for max two weeks but boy did that set me up for a smooth recovery. You will have OT and PT and relearn the skills you will need to survive I've after surgery. It was wonderful. Of course your insurance would help you determine if you can take advantage of this option.
Well that is just a few tips. This site will answer many more of your questions. Thanks Adam and Heart valve Warriors.

Richard Munson Great advice. I was 79 almost 80 and now 82. My stamina is worse. Yet i think i am in great shape. But i suspect not because of heart surgery but due to age. Hello all! I am now 12 weeks post surgery. My life has pretty much returned to normal. I am currently in my third week of cardiac rehab. I love it. By the way I turned 84 today and if you told me in the past that I'd be recovering from valve surgery at this age, I'd say you were nuts. But here I am!😊🙋
My wish after surgery was to go straight home. My Son convinced me to go to acute rehab for 12 days. Acute rehab only takes patients for a limited amount of time. At the point which I entered it was 5 days post surgery.
I cannot stress this enough. Go to acute rehab!. You may think you can do it on your own or with help of friends or family but... Believe me it won't be easy..
Acute rehab does lots for you. 1. You can take things one step at a time. 2. They provide many lessons in skills for living. OT and PT. 3. The PT is invaluable. I sure was able to build strength there. 4. You have peace of mind knowing you are being monitored for your health. 5. When you leave you are ready for the next phase of recovery.
Please, if your insurance will cover this do it. Medicare covers it completely and I am sure some other plans will help as well.
My recovery has been so wonderful I feel younger than I have in many years. Do me and yourself a favor. If you are near surgery and you have time to arrange this....do it!!!
Love to all you heart warriors. Thank you Adam for developing this site!😊
I just want to say that thanks to you all. . .many of you had your heart surgery years ago ,who still post and Provide encouragement the newbe's here.

Six weeks today after my one for aortic stenosis. I had heavy calcium around aortic valve which was replaced by a bovine valve. The surgeon cleaned up the, aortic root as well. They found a tear in my right ventricle which was repaired as well. After 3 transfusions and 17 hours intubated all was well.
Feeling great now. So far so good. My progress has been wonderful so far. No pain from the beginning. I was in the hospital 7 days then transferred to acute rehab. The best thing that could have happened to me.
For anyone who is waiting for their surgery, I would recommend acute rehab after hospital. Once I got there I realized that I needed the extra time to heal and OT and PT were great. On to outpatient cardiac rehab on April 15. By the way, I am 83. Be well heart warriors🙋😊👍

J Alexander Lassally Hi Susan. I'm glad you've had such progress in 9 days! That is great. I just had this convo with my parents (Type II controlled 80 year old) endocrinologist and orthopedic surgeon for them. They are not having OHS, but still cautioning that insulin may be necessary for some time after an orthopedic procedure. She (endo) said for lighter procedures, one may bounce back quickly to no insulin and normal levels, but the ortho surgeon said some patients stay on it for a "long time." His words. So no clear answer. Sternotomy is a massive surgery, so I imagine your diabetes situation is still wet paint. I'd make sure to meet with insulin educator in case it does not drop to normal levels quickly. Good luck.

Hello all and thank you for your posts. It's amazing how I never recognized my stenosis symptoms before being in this group. In addition to needing aortic valve replacement I am a diet controlled diabetic for 18 years. A1c now in the 6's. Was in the 5's until 4 years ago. I asked my cardiologist if I needed to get my numbers lower with meds but he said not necessary to make I changes now. So many of you have had such success with this surgery it encourages me a lot. Please keep posting. The most surgery I have had was a cataract removed 20 years ago. I had been counting on TAVR but I find it's not possible. The closer the surgery gets the more I stress out. I am determined to do this now before my age and unforseen age related problems occur and make it more difficult. Right now I am strong despite the diabetes. I want to reach 100 like my Mom did ( she died at 102 and 8 months, with no obvious cause of death except extreme old age). Keep posting, keep encouraging me. Thanks for being here.

I didn't get a pillow either but got a heart hugger which I would recommend over a pillow any day. Don't fret over your decision. Hope this helps and keep us posted on your journey.

Yumiko Ishida I had mine locally in Phoenix. Cleaveland Clinic was mentioned once, but I wanted to be near home and never pursued it. I almost went with a surgeon in Scottsdale, but my cardiologist pointed out that he does not have privileges at the Scottsdale hospital, so if I did that, I would have had to get a new cardiologist. It was ultimately about picking the right surgeon, and the hospital came with him, but it also made sense to me to surround myself with a team of doctors that knew me and each other.

Sharon Behl That's right, it's all about finding the right fit for your individual situation. No one in Colorado could do re-repairs, so I needed to travel to the experts. Everyone's situation is a bit different. Try to be at peace with your decision. Perhaps Presbyterian could connect you with one of their former heart patients. Many hospitals have a list of volunteers willing to talk about their experience. It might bring you some reassurance. Best of luck to you Susan!

Rob Elwood If your surgeon is not completely comfortable with your specific type of procedure, they would refer you to a hospital that has staff that specialize in your specific operation. I would have gone local, but the local, highly respected and successful guy told me that I should see someone that does my exact type of surgery more frequently. I am grateful to him for that.

Surgery is now two weeks away. Still nervous but reading your stories has helped. Mostly asymptomatic but some shortness of breath. 83 is my age and I've been a diet controlled diabetic for 15 years. A1c in the 6s. I asked my doctor about meds to get it lower. He said not necessary at this time. I have been in the 5s except for the past 3 years. I am hopeful for a successful replacement of my aortic valve and getting my life back on track. Just concerned.

Andrea Babcock The waiting is the worst. My husbands surgery is this Wednesday 2/7 and we have been waiting for the surgery for 3 month now which is when we found out anything was actually wrong from a routine Echocardiogram. He has no symptoms so it makes it harder walking into this surgery knowing he will be feeling horrible after but feels well currently. His last day doing home improvement work was last Friday. We are both scared but hoping for the very best outcome. That is all we can do besides all the research and reading is driving us both crazy at this point. I have not slept well since November because of this. Wishing the best for you and understand how you feel!

Susan Dunne Thanks Andrea, I too have no symptoms that I can identify. I can only look at the progression of this disease on the test results. I wanted to do tavr but because of my actual anatomy slight enlargement of one of my heart chambers, it would too dangerous. My surgeon has extensive experience with savr and on pump surgery. There is a "heart hospital" here in Albuquerque that does more surgeries yearly but when I took my husband there for his cancer they wouldn't take my back up insurance so its not an option for me. Presbyterian is a medical center with a tavr and vascular surgery department, so that's my choice if I don't want to travel across the country. The reading and research helps but sometimes confuses. Drives me crazy. Wishing wonderful outcome and quick recovery to your husband. Thanks👍

Just read about Andrea's father in law having his kidneys shut down after pacemaker surgery. He is ok now. How often are kidneys affected after open heart surgery?.
My brother who was much older than me had gall bladder surgery and his kidneys shut down and he died. Although he was 90 at that time. It never occurred to me that it could happen. Just hearing about it is scary.
Still hopeful. Want it done and behind me. But nervous....

Marie Myers We were ALL nervous, as are the people facing cancer surgery, brain surgery, and transplant surgery among others. There are lots of possible side effects and complications with any surgery, treatment , or medication. The vast majority of people on this site do well, since the odds are with us , not against us. Kidneys can fail without surgery also…Try not to dwell on all the possible bad Things that can happen to you, and dwell on the good things, like getting your heart fixed. I have to get ready to go now. Today I volunteer at a Therapeutic Riding program for special needs children. I could not be doing this if my aortic aneurysm had burst and killed me, so I am grateful I had surgery almost 7 years ago….
Susan Dunne Thank you so much. This is a big step but I'm determined to do this now. You encourage me.

Thank you all for your sharing, I really appreciate it. I've been seeing this cardiac team for several months but I only met my surgeon this last visit. We first went for watchful waiting but this last test said the severe stenosis is getting much worse. I really don't want to wait until this really handicaps me. Besides the later I do this the worse it might be because of my age. Surgery is less than 3 weeks away now. I'm getting more nervous.
Hanging in. Appreciate more comments.

Barbara deLoache Hi Susan, I certainly understand the anxiety as I am experiencing the same. I will know on 2/28 whether I have to have open heart or TAVR. I think being a bit older than most folks on this site adds a bit of extra concern for us. i choose to be positive but the fear sneaks in anyway. My major concern is having a stroke or other complication which would cause me to be dependent on others.. perhaps in a big way. But you & I will be OK.. because we are both heart warriors!! 😘

Susan Dunne Hi Barbara, I will have my surgery on Feb.19. I am older, 83, and although I am mostly asymptomatic my stenosis is severe. I have done much reading about early surgery and better outcomes so I decided that rather than risk waiting longer at my age I should do it now. My doctors told me that waiting another six months is not advised. I can't have have because of a congenital problem with the mitral valve and the actual shape of my heart. Please keep in touch. Thanks

Susan Dunne I ha a had several echocardiograms. Experience subtle symptoms like shortness of breath but seem to be otherwise asymptomatic. I have been on this journey for over a year and have already scheduled surgery. I have a problem with my mitral valve that caused a murmer, maybe from birth, but I had scarlet fever and rubella as a child which might have caused the problem. Murmer found at age 7. The aortic valve is severely calcified. I'd like to hear from any of you with similar conditions and if you feel early surgery is right to do. I don't want to doubt myself now that I have made this decision.
Three weeks out from surgery I need to feel confident in my choice. Surgery is for the aortic valve only. Doctors say waiting 6 months is not advised.

Rose Madura I had rheumatic fever which severely damaged my aortic valve which is probably why you don't qualify for the TAVR. I had surgery at age 59. I didn't really think I was having symptoms but I really was and just chalked it up to getting older. By the time I had the surgery, I couldn't even wait 2 months. I'd definitely listen to the doctors but really recommend that second opinion for peace of mind for you if nothing else. Godspeed.

Richard Munson Susan, Does it count if i was 79 at the time of my heart surgery? Susan, you will be nervous, all normal. I was petrified. Here i am now facing 82 and glad i did it. Attitude is big. My wife says i have an attitude. I take that as a badge of courage. I wear it proudly. I visited my urologist today to discuss my elevated psa test. I told him i’m nearing 82 but i’m not quite ready to pack it in. He laughed and said he wished more patients had my attitude. Positive attitude will get you through. Just remember the alternative is not great.

J Alexander Lassally Not an aortic patient but a mitral valve patient. I concur with the above. Getting multiple second or third opinions from doctors will cement in your timing and choices. Make sure you are super confident of your surgeon and hospital. Remote consults are very much possible if you mail in your discs and records, and many hospitals do not charge for first consults. Good luck.

Rob Elwood Susan, I am still in recovery from Aortic valve and aortic root replacement. I am overwhelmed with how great everyone has been. Surgery itself was just fall safely asleep and wake up in recovery. My main advice to anyone doing a sternotomy is plan to have 24 hour help. I needed it. I have needed assistance with everything from going to bathroom, eating, getting in and out bed, etc.The nurses can only do so much.

Suelynn Hanegraaf Hi Susan - I was born with a bicuspid aortic valve and choose to replace it with a bio-prosthetic one (bovine) in 2011 after consulting with two different cardiac surgeons - one at Cleveland Clinic, the other at Loyola University Medical Center (Chicago). I have multiple food sensitivities, and medication and environmental allergies. My CC surgeon recommended the bovine valve. It has lasted nearly 13 years and I am now facing re-replacement because it has "entered" severe stenosis. I'm scheduling two different cardiac surgeon appointments in the next couple of weeks - one at Cleveland Clinic, the other at Northwestern Medicine (Chicago). I agree with Grace. If you have time, second opinions are advantageous - simply because you learn more. Praying for you and everyone in our heart valve community.
Heart valve surgery works.
