True... always better to repair!! They are usually prepared with a replacement valve just in case the repair is not possible.... because they won't see the condition of the valve until they are in there. Mine was repaired twice during the same surgery, but my surgeon who was an expert at repair was successful. I had mitral, tricuspid repair two years ago. Also a maze. Feel free to ask questions if you have any. Best wishes and prayers!! 🙏🏻💞

Sharon Shultz Hi Wanda. I did have both mitral valve repair an d tricuspid repair. Surgery itself went well, complications after, but came home and had been doing well, until last Friday...my heart rate was running in the 90's, which they told me was fine, but it has now jumped to 105-120. they put halter monitor on today. Just scary.

Wanda Mroz Not unusual.. my aflutter came almost a year after surgery! I’ve had a cardioversion and ablation. You can read about it in my journal. I have to be on a blood thinner but hopefully the heart rate is ok now. Yes it is a scary feeling for sure.🙏🏻💞

Sharon,
It is always better to have your valves repaired rather than replaced, if possible. If your local doctors are pushing replacement, it is because they don't know how to do the repairs. Get a second opinion after your cath and tee. It will give you peace of mind.
Godspeed,
Sharon Shultz Thank you Deb. That's what my husband keeps saying, let's get another opinion.

Welcome! It's natural to be nervous, it's a big thing. But you have one of the best doctors working on you. I have a consult scheduled with dr Adams in early March and hope for surgery right around the same time as you. How did your meeting with dr Adams go? What did you think of mt Sinai ?

Sharon Shultz Dr. Adams is obviously a great surgeon. He explained everything well and tried to make me feel more comfortable. I know I am in good hands and the hospital staff that we met were all very nice. I guess I am just having a hard time with the entire process. I have autoimmune disease and concerned how that may affect my surgery and recovery period. In addition, my raynauds is very bad in the winter months, thus my reason for waiting to schedule til end on March. Thanks for your positive comments!
Jim Hernandez My thoughts to you as you navigate thru the next couple of months. We are all here for you

Sharon Shultz Hi Jim. He is direct and to the point. I did a lot of research prior to setting up the appointment with him. I was not disappointed. I feel very confident in having him do the surgery. They are booking 2-3 months out. I had my consult mid October but has taken me awhile to get used to the idea. The staff that I met at Mt. Sinai were very nice, but am still quite nervous. Good luck with your consult in Boston.
