An added comment to the aortic stenosis/ bicuspid diagnosis. I was informed during an antenatal visit over 40 years ago with doctor using stethoscope only that I had a bicuspid aortic valve. 12 years ago another doctor decided that would be appropriate be under the umbrella of the Cardiac Department of the local hospital. At this point my heart was checked by cardiologists with echo measurements. Two yearly, yearly and finally six monthly, with cardiologists including the head of Dept/ professor of the teaching hospital still were in agreement that it was bicuspid. Post surgery I learnt that it was not Bicuspid but that two leaflets had calcified!
Sue Waterworth Thanks Vivien. Yes, that's what I'm thinking, but don't suppose I'll ever know for sure.

Sue Waterworth Thanks Steven. I'm surviving Winter - today is forecast to be 17 = 62F. Unseasonably warm for mid winter. And there's been lots of sun, which even when cold, helps make it seem warm. I've just written another post that you'll probably see pop up soon on the recovery. It's going well, I'm pleased to say.

Steven Methot I'm happy to hear that. We're celsius too here, and it is forecast to break record temperatures over the coming days (37!) with poor air quality due to smoke from forest fires. I almost wish I was back in hospital with air conditioning!

Hi Sue...your post on Steven’s Journal about your recovery is very impressive...and encouraging! Only 3 1/2 weeks and you are catching the bus to cardiac rehab for an hour of light exercise? I wanted to ask if you had any comments about your surgery that perhaps you wished you had been aware of previously during your hospital stay...or any general comments you might want to pass along to those of us expecting surgery in the near future.

Sue Waterworth Hi Diane. Just read your posts and loved them. That sense of humour is one of the truly important things to take with you; it'll help you, and the surgeon and staff will love it and respond to it too. And the same goes for 'strong' language - it helps.
Know that you'll be asleep when they put all those lines and things in for the surgery, so you shouldn't feel a thing, small veins or not. Afterwards, I had blood taken every day till I thought I must be exsanguinated or at least anemic, so you might want to ask if they can leave a cannula in for that.
In a few short weeks, you'll be where I am now, with the worst behind you. Keep us informed when you feel like it, but do EVERYTHING at your pace.

Good luck Sue! The wait seems to be the hardest part and its almost over for you. Hang in there and take it one day at a time!

Sue Waterworth Dan and Mark, thank you both for your thoughts. It feels amazing to be getting good wishes from people you don't know, half a world away. The worst is way behind now, (2 weeks post-op) and I'm home and happy. While the incision in a bit tender, I don't have any pain.
I've always loved quiet and peace, and now I understand just what that really means!!!

Hi Sue from Dunedin, New Zealand. Have been trying to get through to you. I had my Aortic tissue valve operation 1/3/2018(1st of March for those who are not from around here). Surgery and recovery went very well. Was active and relatively fit going in. Symptoms being breathless when pushing it and towards the end quite tired by the end of the working day. Would be happy to email you to share experiences.

Sue Waterworth Hello Vivien. Didn't access internet while in hospital, so thank you a bit late, for your best wishes. I too was fit going in, and had a good surgery and recovery. And believe those two things are very much connected. So glad it went well for you, and hope it's continuing to do so.
I'm delighted to be walking well, and only get just a tiny bit breathless going upstairs. So living alone doesn't look too hard, so long as I remember not to do too much too soon.

Corinna, I'll send you some good thoughts on Monday. Hope we both have a comfy ride.
Maybe I'm in denial, but I seem fairly relaxed, reckoning that I simply have no control over this one, so I might as well let go and hand over to higher powers.
But as I live alone, there seems to be lots to do, making sure everything is set for an easy return. I've opted to have a week in rehab after the week in hospital, so I'll be more ready to head back into life. At least, that's the plan!
I've been reading this site for ages, so feel pretty well prepared. I'm just looking forward to being on the other side, and into Spring. Lovely to know there are new friends close by.

Are you being operated on in Hobart or on the mainland? I have a special spot in my heart for Tasmania as my wife's nephew and his family lived there for a few years and the pictures and tales he kept sending our way made us long for the journey.

Sue Waterworth Hello Steven. I'm having my surgery in Hobart, in a brand new unit at Calvary. It's taken forever and numerous cancellations for the teething problems to be ironed out, but seems all is now well!
Just read your story, and I think it's so much harder to deal with things when you're fit, and not in seeming dire straits. I still don't have overt symptoms. But, the alternative, of just 'falling off your perch' is not what I wanted, either.
So, hope all goes well quickly, and you get sorted and back to exercising fast.
Hobart is a gorgeous place to live (much of the time) and well worth visiting. I'm looking out across Lindisfarne Bay at a pink and snow-dusted Mt Wellington. Mind you, it is only 3 degrees just yet, at 8am.
