That said, well, things are mostly stable with the heart and I'm plugging ahead. Tonight I am opening a one-man show of all things. Mr. Charles Dickens will be telling his story "A Christmas Carol". The missus made me do it, she's arranged the music for it. I will admit that it's taking a lot, like A LOT of energy to do this and I crash for a day in between shows, but hey, it's living.
Know that you all are inspirations to me and I really appreciate this community. Happy Holidays to all.

Going in for gall bladder surgery tomorrow "on call". Surgeon is a nice guy and said "Well, I can do this elective and have you wait a few weeks, or we can get it done now." Now it is.
But here's the interesting part. Since changing my diet slightly to remove fats my BP has dropped significantly, like 15 points drop.
It isn't what I'm NOT eating, (eggs and cheese), but what I AM eating. I used to have a bowl of Yogurt with fruit in the morning. Now it's oatmeal with the fruit. I have substituted a lot more lentils and stuff for cheeses and eggs. Since I'm the cook I get to say what I eat. I make this really tasty (and I'm not just saying that) lentil patty that we used to use for barbecue hamburgers, now it's like a falafel patty on toast.
Problem is that the missus can't eat lentils, needs high fat dairy and well it's like "Jack Sprat could eat no fat, his wife could eat no lean..."
Both lentils and oatmeal have compounds that do tend to lower BP.
I thought I was doing everything right recently and still BP was high, manageably high, but my daily average is now 110 over 70 and that's wild.
So when people say that small changes can't make a difference, they can!
Oh and my untrained eye at the CT scan of the aneurysm shows almost a 1mm growth this year. Not fast but not slow either.

Not the surgery I thought I would be facing, but... I'm going under the knife for gall bladder. Gah. At any rate the surgeon has actually performed a couple of emergency repairs of a dissecting aneurysm and he said that he'd throw it in free of charge if needed. (We're not in the US).
Gotta wait for a free spot though.
And while all that is going on, the Echo and CT scans are happening this week. Echo came back fine for the valve and 51 mm for the aneurysm. We'll get more precise with the CT.
Now back to being bilious.

Just call me a bloody (really!) pin cushion. I drove down over the mountain road in to town to one of the beeeg hospitals for my CT and CTA scans.
Now I'm normally very good with being poked with needles and with IVs going in, but they couldn't find a vein that worked. Three attempts on wrists, another two on arms and finally a little bit of a nurse bustled in and did it. Apparently these ones are at a wider gauge than usual, but I've had dye before and had no problem.
Oh and Nitro-Migraine Causing-glycerin! Oh Joy!
When Natalie saw my arms and all the gauzed up wounds she asked if I'd insulted them in some way!
At any rate the tech said they got really good pictures and repeated that. "Your doc will have a clear diagnostic tool". How's that for saying something without saying something eh?

Brady Busch It nice to see a sense of humor about these things. It reminds me of an experience I had just before getting a pacemaker install. They needed an IV in my left arm,for some unknown reason to me,even now.So while in the bed,a nurse attempted a couple times, without finding what she wanted.Another tried with no success. Then they made a call to the expert vein finder and after about two to three tries,he told them to leave it for the pacemaker crew. The guy there did it on the first poke. Now,I let the people drawing blood, know which arm to use.

Happy New Year gang. Spent the last month sick (and I mean SICK) with RSV and only started to feel half human on last Saturday. Had to cancel some heart testing twice due to it.
It was RSV, and then some subsidiary infections, ear aches, throat problems. Gah!
At any rate had my stress test today and it seems that my habit of outlasting the test and testers much to their surprise does continue. It turns out that my years of being a distance runner has done something to my perception of effort. The heart doesn't kick into overdrive until it believes that I mean it...
We should have the results in a day or so, then it's off for the annual "Let's measure that dang aneurysm" scan.
My belief is that even though it is in operable range they're still going to keep up the watchful waiting. The heart seems strong, the valve is not stenotic and I'm not dead from the aneurysm just yet...
I described it as a bit like the sword of Damocles hanging over my head, but hey... I now live in a beautiful part of the world where I can marvel that our garlic is sticking its head above ground and I have wildflowers to pick for the missus.
If you have a chance to get the RSV vaccination - do it. This is one heck of a virus.

Hi all. Long time no post! Been doing okay-ish. We finished the heavy lifting (2+ years) of renos just in time to have 10 weeks (10 WEEKS?!?!) of visits over the summer and early fall. Then I went away with the missus to celebrate my getting old. During all that time I walked... had great exercise.
But. My BP was "volatile". Two weeks ago I woke up to 155 over 112 and although it settled that disturbed me. At any rate it's back to a lower range after me doing not much different. However the Diastolic is still high.
I went to see our family practice this past Friday and the NP there was going to check in with my cardiologist... and we had a follow up for later this week.
Today is Canadian Thanksgiving. I'm all dolled up in my apron and making the fixings and I get a call from... my NP. I remind you, it's Thanksgiving. She is sending a new Rx to my pharmacy for me to start tomorrow to get the Diastolic down.
It's Thanksgiving. Well I told her that I was grateful for her, but that this IS a holiday. She said "Well, that's all part of being in health care."
Yeah, that's just one more reason to be grateful today.
PS... I walk about 10 km a day, and while I am a bit overweight, I am fit...
Kimberly Eisenhut Hope you get things sorted out and wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I don't know if anyone else has had this experience, but today I came face to face with having to navigate one's medical condition with someone who is also similarly challenged.
We have dear friends as house guests. One of them is living with cancer and was having a bad morning. I awoke quite ill due to a chronic condition un-related to my heart but which had my BP plummet into very low territory. Both of us "managed", I was glad that I'd prepared the breakfast frittata last night and that Natalie just had to warm it up, else breakfast might not have happened.
It was interesting how we as humans can adapt to our situations and can give ourselves the space to be - whether healthy or not. So we both sat there and just "were" while the hustle and bustle of our spouses and our other house guest (one of our sons) surrounded us.
As we emerged from our particular "sloughs of despond" we smiled at each other and said almost at the same moment "It's good to be alive." Yes. Yes it is.
Have a good one, heart warriors!

So my family practice called and wanted to see me to review the results of the PET scan. It's a 5 minute stroll for me - such a hardship! I like my practitioner and in the year or so we've been with them we've gotten into the habit of lightly teasing each other.
There was nothing on the PET scan we didn't already know about, the assumption being that what I'd gone in for and what they saw was benign.
Then she says "Oh, and apparently you have an aneurysm on your ascending aorta. The radiographer suggests that you have that looked at." Grin.
But the beeeg thing was what she saved for last. "Remember a few weeks back when you thought you'd cracked a rib? You said it hurt but you didn't want to be a whinger? Well, it wasn't a cracked rib, it was three broken ribs, clean break. Want a gold star for being a trooper?"
I guess if I want sympathy from now on I'll look in the dictionary. Apparently it's between "sh*t" and "syphillis."

Just had a phone call visit with my cardiologist which was an unexpected surprise.
He called to check in and say that he was on board with waiting another year for surgery (another cycle of CT scan / ultrasound / etc.) because he sees the need for a "one and done" Bentall procedure and not just a piece meal graft of the aneurysm.
Nice chat and nice chap. I reviewed my self-designed cardio exercise routine that I based off of my days as a runner and running coach - only now it is walking based and he enthusiastically signed off on it because it has helped measurably with my BP.

I'm looking through pictures on my computer and came across this one and others from 14 years ago today. It was the day after I found out that something was drastically wrong with me. One of my boybarians and I had gone back country skiing across Upper Kananaskis Lake, a 4 mile ski pulling sleds, and the slog up from the lake was arduous because my skis didn't cut it and we hadn't brought snow shoes with us. I was in snow up to my armpits and although I was a distance runner I hadn't known exertion like that. I developed asthma and low blood pressure (there was a nurse with us) and basically took it very easy for the remainder of the trip. Incidentally that was one of the comfiest nights sleep I'd ever had. If you haven't tried winter camping you're missing out on something. The temps were below 0 Fahrenheit and we were nice and warm and toasty.
At any rate the son had developed a cough and on return we went to see our doc, a Dr. House kinda guy. He took one look at my son and dismissed him with "Cold. You know what to do." Then turned to me and demanded I get on the table. "Heart murmur. Asthma... I'm referring you to a cardiologist..." and thus the journey began.
How did your journeys start?

Brady Busch We find out things in different ways, but somehow they get discovered.I had a small mole, that looked like it was getting darker and went to a general practitioner, who listened to my heart with a stethoscope. She said I had a murmur and sent me to get an echo-cardiogram.It was my first one and there were strange whoosing noises, when the sound was on.But nothing was told to me,from that test. So,a few years later, while at another hospital, either they were sent the echo results or caught the murmur,I talked with some cardiologists and was told, the condition probably had been going on for a long time. Most likely a bicuspid aortic valve from birth. That was about 2017.Echos were done about every six months and surgery in 2021,as the stenosis became severe.

Trygve Harris I've apparently had this for years but it's like there was a force-field around it, as no one had ever diagnosed or sent me to a cardiologist and I went through breast cancer treatment at Sloan and even visited the Pulmonary centre at NYU because I'm symptomatic--I lost my breath. The murmur would flag, apparently, and every single place would say the same thing: you know you have a heart murmur? I would say I've been told. What does it mean? And the reply was always a version of "Probably nothing!" Never occurred to me my breathing troubles were my heart, as I had so many tests with chemo, surgeries, etc.I assumed it was from chemo and made worse from the reconstruction. I have been living in Oman/New York and Oman doesn't have the ability to diagnose this and New York failed miserably, continuously. I moved very recently, like 2 months ago, from Muscat to Dubai, and someone recommended a British Hospital here, Kings College London, Dubai Hills. My Omani insurance covers the world (except the US,) and the doctors there immediately saw I needed a cardiologist and found me one, and he diagnosed me as having severe stenosis almost immediately. We got the tests done and her arranged for me to go to Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi for surgery. The surgeon inspires confidence and I'm scheduled in 2 days....

Yo! So, um, I was sorta kinda sick and tired of the tilt-a-whirl amusement park ride that is medical opinion that I didn't call my cardiologist to confer with him about the surgeon's opinion(s). At any rate the surgeon was going to have a meeting with the cardiologist to talk about patients and would send him a report - so I got off that ride for a bit.
But, the medical system is still clicking. Got a call to start scheduling the next round of tests. Echo is scheduled will in advance for May and they're also looking at penciling me in for the CT with dye on or about my birthday in September. This isn't "waiting list" territory, it's just proactive scheduling, so I know I'm not forgotten.
So, we're back at renos and stuff. cut down a couple of trees, moving garden boxes all under the watchful eye of she who must be obeyed.

I promised an update after having spoken with the surgeon again. He has spoken with two other colleagues and wanted to inform me of the results.
Essentially, they are all in violent agreement.
While the aneurysm is well within the operable range they note that it is relatively stable. They advise close monitoring but not surgery.
I had thought that they were a bit at odds with all the previous cardiologists and surgeons I had spoken with in our previous home town but that is not the case. Where I had understood that any surgery would be a Bentall procedure type of chest busting, we had thought that our new surgeon was just talking about a small graft and not touching the valve.
He elaborated - he thinks that any surgery SHOULD be Bentall but that right now with the valve being stable and the root not being at a dimension where he would operate on the aorta... he wants to wait.
But... he admits that the restrictions on our lifestyle are still in place and that we're left with a Sword of Damocles. Oh well. Have a nice day and don't strain.
So: Yes, you definitely need an operation. No, not just yet.

Been doing a bit of processing - talking with Natalie and walking and, yes, renovating the bathroom.
I learned something that I didn't know or fully comprehend before - that the aneurysm ISN'T at the aortic root but further above that. hence the surgeon not wanting to do a Bentall procedure. The fact that the valve is stable at mild to moderate regurgitation and no stenosis also means he's more reluctant to touch it too.
But that doesn't mean that the root is a healthy diameter, just that it's still below 50 mm. And the fact that it's not growing that fast over time is why the surgeon would be okay with waiting. He doesn't want to do two surgeries. Well, neither do I, but we are coming at it from two perspectives.
He says he'll confer with colleagues including my former surgeon in Calgary and we'll talk again, but I think that they'll concur with waiting, even though the aneurysm is operable.
I feel as if there's this sword hanging over me. I don't want needless surgery, but I don't want the next years to be one after another either.

Greg Lewis Frank, it's quite a bit different here. In Canada, we don't get the same options as in the States. We don't pick surgeons, or hospitals, or procedures even, to some extent. The trade off is that we don't pay for it.
Slightly longer version: The merry-go-round continues.
Slightly longer with more context: Ask two doctors and get three opinions.
Point Form: - Surgeon will not touch the valve as it is relative stable and not stenotic, mild/medium regurgitation - Surgeon wants to monitor the aneurysm but would operate ONLY on the ascending portion and not touch the root (see first point above). - Surgeon will speak with his 3 colleagues here to get another 17 opinions.
Oh, but he will operate if we want. And he acknowledges that the cardiologist has a valid opinion.

Writing and re-writing papers for a tough grader professor, and trying to be a perfectionist in all of my classes kept my mind occupied. All I cared about was seeing my final grades when I woke up after surgery. I’d suggest finding a small project, reading, or writing. I’m terrible at keeping plants alive but I think it’s the season where people plant seeds to watch them grow in the Spring. Maybe try basil or something that should be easy to grow so you have little things to look forward to after surgery? The wait is so much harder than anything else.

Amy Berger Looks really nice - love the wall color :)
