Theresa,
I also had rheumatic fever, or so the doctors think when I was a child. I was diagnosed with a heart murmur at age 40. A mitral valve stenosis was revealed. I was monitored by cardiologists for the last 18 years. Last Spring my cardiologist suggested I have a heart cath to really figure out when this surgery should take place.
In May had the cath done. Good news was my arteries were in pristine condition. Not so good: the mitral valve was not functioning very well.
Decided to consult with thoracic heart surgeon. Surgery July 29th, 2014. All went well, had minimal invasive procedure. So my dear friend you have the right idea. Get this over as soon as possible. Feel free to email me at kidsjunction@gmail.com if you want to communicate more.
