Hi Thomas,
I hope you have a great consult today with your surgeon. You raise a great question in your post. Here are a few questions you may want to ask your surgeon given your diagnosis of a leaky aortic valve that is bicuspid.
1. What is wrong with my valve?
2. How do you know now is the right time for me to have surgery?
3. How many heart valve procedures have you performed during your career?
4. How many aortic valve procedures do you perform annually?
5. As I have aortic regurgitation, can you repair the valve? If so, how will you repair it? If not, why can't you repair the valve?
6. How many aortic valve repairs have you performed during your career?
7. Do you perform the Ross Procedure? If so, how many have you done? Considering I'm a young guy, might the Ross Procedure be a good fit for me? Why or why not?
8. What approach will you use to access the heart for your recommended procedure - sternotomy, minimally-invasive?
9. What are your surgical outcomes for the procedure you are recommending for me? What are your mortality rates for the procedure you are recommending for me?
10. What are your thoughts about cardiac rehab? Does this hospital have a good cardiac rehab program?
11. Do you have any patients that I can talk with to discuss their experiences with you and your team?
I hope that helps! If you have any questions, please let me know.
Keep on tickin!
