Hello Wojtek, I am 5 weeks post op and the gasping and hiccup stuff has almost disappeared. If I do notice it, it is so soft I hardly notice. Think it will go away. Have been breathing through mouth since surgery and had dry, sore throat. I can now turn on side slightly while sleeping and that has made a big difference. Hope you are doing much better.

Wojtek Blasiak Thanks Patricia. I have been doing a bit better and definitely there is some improvements. I have been used some muscle relaxing pills and that seems to be working. The hiccups is almost gone but feeling like constantly want to cough. My cardiologist assure me that this will go away and he's theory is for every hr of anesthesia, there is 1 week of recovery. I'm past 5 weeks and since my surgery was conducted for 8 hrs so I will give myself couple more weeks. Meanwhile, my appetite return, pain increased in my chest area ( cardiologist assure me it's normal since I had build chest muscle and muscle fibers take longer to heal). A bit struggling with a sleeping but I take this as a process of healing. Thank you again for replying and hope each day is better for you as well. Take care of yourself and would love to hear more how you doing down the road. Cheers!

Hi Wojtek, I remembered some things that helped me and might be worth trying. If you were given a device to practice breathing, try to use it gently every hour for a few days. If it causes a reaction, try what a Physical Therapist suggested to me. Very gently so as to not cause a gasp, breathe in as though you are smelling roses. Then breathe out through your mouth as though you are blowing out a candle. Do 2 or 3 of these throughout the day when you think of it. I noticed some relief when I practiced these. I hope you have some relief soon.

Just read your question about talking. My AVR was Nov 1 and I had a little trouble getting enough air out to form words. Nothing that alarmed anyone. Then at 9 days, my food felt like it was getting stuck in my throat for about 4 days. Now I gasp involuntarily at odd times. Sometimes when I am talking and other times sitting or walking. Don't know what causes it. It's like a hiccup coming on but it is a small gasp for air. It is slowly becoming less intense and I am hoping it will go away. I see my cardiologist next week and if he has an explanation, I'll write you.
