Candi Atkins I am scheduled for aortic valve replacement on October 30, with mitral and tricuspid repairs or replacement at the same time. Pre-op is next week and I am a little overwhelmed. Great cardiologist who referred me to a great surgeon. Worried about recovery as I live alone, my kids will be here for the surgery but not when I am released from hospital. I am 69 and am looking forward to being able to walk again without trouble breathing. Any words of wisdom or advice?????

susan kotansky From my great experience (just kidding) two weeks out of surgery, I would strongly suggest that you arrange for someone to stay with you when you go home. Your insurance most probably covers at least part time assistance. You will initially need help with everything. Even though it gets easier rather quickly you will definitely need assistance in the beginning. And you can of course look forward to walking without struggle. I wish you the very very best with your surgery!!!

Sophia Ridley Hi Candi, I'm pre-op and went to a seminar of what to expect... They recommended strongly having assistance as Susan says, and to prepare plenty of meals ahead of time ready to microwave (or buy low salt ready meals) and make sure you have things to hand such as clean towels (one every day) and clothes before your op.

Shawn Urban I went home five days after surgery and did everything myself. My mom and daughter were present for a few days but I did not let them do anything for me. Like the others have mentioned, just pre-plan and have a well stocked fridge and freezer. Very doable. That being said, the company is very nice. Especially in the mental state you will find yourself in.

Candi Atkins I have some very good and supportive friends who live across the street, next door and my brother and his wife live 10 miles away, so I may have enough help and emotional support. I am very lucky and quite optimistic.

Ginger Marine Candi, I insisted on going into a nursing home/rehab center because I live alone waayy out in the country. I did that for 12 days and got PT and got well very quickly. Then went to a daughter's for about 2 weeks where there would be someone there at night, plus closer to medical help. Then, the MINUTE the surgeon released me, I drove like a bat HOME!
For me, that was the very best solution--I was watched over, fed, etc, but also got PT/OT every day. I had to really push for it--the discharge planner tried to dismiss it without even running by the insurance. My daughters spoke up for me and insisted that someone LISTEN (all those city folk had no idea what I was talking about--no cell coverage? Hospital 40 miles away?) and the insurance company did approve it. Don't know if it would be an option you'd be interested in, but it kept me engaged, talking to people, being checked on, etc till I was pretty strong.
